Targeted and non-targeted analysis for the investigation of pesticides influence on wheat cultivated under field conditions

Klaudia Pszczolinska et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive approach was used to evaluate the effects of pesticides on wheat metabolism. The results showed that commercially available pesticide formulations used under field conditions can affect the metabolism of wheat. Gas and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry were employed to analyze the concentrations of pesticides and their metabolites in wheat roots and shoots. The metabolic profiles of the wheat changed during the experiment, but no further changes were observed after approximately 15 days despite the presence of pesticides and their metabolites.

Quantitative non-targeted analysis: Bridging the gap between contaminant discovery and risk characterization

James P. McCord et al.

Summary: Chemical risk assessments traditionally rely on hazard, dose-response, and exposure data, but with the development of non-targeted analysis (NTA) methods, there is potential for identifying unknown compounds and improving risk-based decision making. Efforts have been made to bridge the quantitative gap of NTA data, which can contribute to contemporary risk assessment frameworks along with other high-throughput data streams and predictive models.

A Framework for Utilizing High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry and Non-targeted Analysis in Rapid Response and Emergency Situations

Allison L. Phillips et al.

Summary: Unknown chemical releases are a major focus of rapid response scenarios for the US Environmental Protection Agency. Recent advancements in high-resolution mass spectrometry and non-targeted analysis have significantly improved the ability to identify unknown compounds quickly and effectively, making them highly relevant in rapid response situations. This article advocates for the consideration of high-resolution mass spectrometry-based non-targeted analysis approaches to support future rapid response needs.

Analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Houston Ship Channel and Galveston Bay following a large-scale industrial fire using ion-mobility-spectrometry-mass spectrometry

Alan Valdiviezo et al.

Summary: PFAS are widely present in water and require analytical methods for rapid comprehensive assessment and fingerprinting. After a fire incident, PFAS-containing firefighting foams were released into water, raising concerns about the contamination level. Untargeted LC-IMS-MS analysis revealed additional PFAS in the water samples, improving our understanding of PFAS presence in complex environmental samples.

Uncertainty estimation strategies for quantitative non-targeted analysis

Louis C. Groff et al.

Summary: In this study, new statistical methods for quantitative NTA (qNTA) using HRMS data were presented and evaluated. The methods successfully estimated chemical concentrations and confidence limits. The study demonstrated the feasibility of using qNTA for chemical risk characterization.

Nontargeted Analysis Study Reporting Tool: A Framework to Improve Research Transparency and Reproducibility

Katherine T. Peter et al.

Summary: Non-targeted analysis (NTA) workflows using mass spectrometry are becoming increasingly popular in various disciplines, but there is still a lack of universally accepted reporting standards. To address this issue, researchers have developed the NTA Study Reporting Tool (SRT), which has been shown to be effective in guiding study design, manuscript writing, and evaluating NTA reporting quality through analysis of published articles.

A Comparative Analysis of Analytical Techniques for Rapid Oil Spill Identification

Alina T. Roman-Hubers et al.

Summary: This study examined the potential of IMS-MS as a high-throughput method for the chemical characterization of crude oils, finding it to be either equal or better than GC-MS in classifying the origins of crude oils and greatly increasing sample analysis throughput. The study demonstrated the utility of IMS-MS for rapid fingerprinting of complex samples and showed its advantages over traditional GC-MS-based analyses in emergency decision-making situations.

Reconstructing the Composition of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Contemporary Aqueous Film-Forming Foams

Bridger J. Ruyle et al.

Summary: Research shows that most of the extractable organofluorine (EOF) in contemporary and legacy AFFF consists of targeted compounds and oxidizable precursors, with 90% being 6:2 fluorotelomers in contemporary products. The novel method developed can accurately determine the total PFAS mass attributable to AFFF in any aqueous sample, differentiate gross precursor classes, and identify major precursor species.
