Comprehensive understanding of DOM reactivity in anaerobic fermentation of persulfate-pretreated sewage sludge via FT-ICR mass spectrometry and reactomics analysis

Jibao Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the composition and reactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) at molecular level is crucial for deciphering regulators and indicators for anaerobic process performance. High-resolution mass spectrometry, machine learning, and data mining were employed to comprehensively elucidate the DOM composition and transformation. The study found that persulfate pretreatment improved volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production, while the presence of iron reduced the VFAs production. Machine learning was able to predict the DOM reactivity classes with high accuracy by considering key molecular parameters.

Nontarget screening based on molecular networking strategy to identify transformation products of citalopram and sertraline in wastewater

Gang Wu et al.

Summary: Citalopram (CIT) and sertraline (SER), widely used antidepressants, have been detected in wastewater. This study identified 13 TPs of CIT and 12 TPs of SER through experiments and in silico toxicity prediction. The transformation pathways of CIT and SER in wastewater were proposed and toxic TPs were found. This research contributes to the understanding of the transformation processes of CIT and SER in wastewater and highlights the importance of studying TPs.

Evidence from molecular marker and FT-ICR-MS analyses for the source and transport of dissolved black carbon under variable water discharge of a subtropical Estuary

Weiqiang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study conducted sampling and dissolved organic matter (DOM) mixing experiments in the Jiulong River estuary (JRE) and found that deposition inputs from soil and atmospheric deposition play a role in estuarine dissolved black carbon (DBC). The composition and concentration of DBC were primarily controlled by mixing, but photodegradation and particle adsorption/flocculation may also contribute to its removal.

Photochemistry of dissolved organic matter in water from the Pearl river (China): Seasonal patterns and predictive modelling

Zhiyang Liao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatiotemporal variability of DOM optical and photochemical properties in the Pearl River by collecting water samples from eleven sites during two seasons. It found significant differences in absorption coefficient, fluorescence intensity, and quantum yields of reactive species between wet and dry seasons. Regression models successfully predicted the concentrations of reactive species in DOM based on optical properties and other variables.

Organic Molecular Signatures of the Congo River and Comparison to the Amazon

Martin R. Kurek et al.

Summary: The study compares the composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Congo and Amazon rivers. The results show that the quality of DOM in the Congo River remains stable across different hydrological conditions, while the composition of DOM in the Amazon River is highly susceptible to changes in hydrology. The DOM in the Congo River is more terrestrial in nature, while the DOM in the Amazon River is more characteristic of aquatic DOM. Additionally, the Congo River is more efficient in exporting specific formulae compared to other rivers.

Experimental Insight into the Enigmatic Persistence of Marine Refractory Dissolved Organic Matter

Xiaoxuan Zheng et al.

Summary: More than 90% of marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is biologically recalcitrant. The recalcitrance can be attributed to either intrinsically refractory molecules or low molecule concentrations, but their relative contributions are debated. Characterizing the molecular composition and bioavailability of marine DOM is critical for understanding this uncertainty.

Composition and lability of photochemically released dissolved organic matter from resuspended estuarine sediments

Jennifer L. Harfmann et al.

Summary: Photochemically-released dissolved organic matter (PR-DOM) from resuspended sediments is of different composition and enhanced lability, mainly consisting of humic-like DOM and reduced aromaticity DOM. The lower molecular weight and higher molecular weight compounds are mainly influenced by nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S)-containing compounds, which affect the lability of PR-DOM from estuarine resuspended sediments.

Accumulation of DOC in the South Pacific Subtropical Gyre from a molecular perspective

Helena Osterholz et al.

Summary: The subtropical South Pacific Gyre contains the largest oligotrophic region in the global ocean, where dissolved organic matter accumulates in the surface waters. A molecular-level study revealed distinct characteristics of the DOM in this region, including high abundances of potentially labile unsaturated aliphatic molecular formulas and a low degradation index. Additionally, microbial utilization of nitrogen-containing DOM and extensive photochemical reworking were evident, reflecting carbon fractions relevant on different timescales.

Spatial changes in molecular composition of dissolved organic matter in the Yangtze River Estuary: Implications for the seaward transport of estuarine DOM

Yuping Zhou et al.

Summary: This study utilized a combination of bulk carbon isotope, optical techniques and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry to investigate the spatial heterogeneity and compositional variations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Yangtze River Estuary. The results revealed high abundance of proteinlike and aliphatic compounds from phytoplankton in the estuary, while polycyclic aromatics and polyphenols from the Yangtze River experienced a decrease within the turbidity zone. The research provides insights into the role of estuaries in sorting and transporting DOM and highlights the potential contribution of terrestrial DOM to the carbon stock of open seas.
