Analysis of environmental organic matters by Ultrahigh-Resolution mass spectrometry-A review on the development of analytical methods

Sungjune Kim et al.

Summary: With the growing environmental and climate changes globally, there is an increasing interest in the molecular-level understanding of environmental organic compound mixtures. Studies have shown that ultrahigh resolution and sub-ppb level mass accuracy are crucial for analyzing complex environmental organic molecule mixtures, achievable using FT-ICR MS. However, challenges in sample preparation, ionization, structural identification, chromatographic separation, and data interpretation remain to be overcome.

Microbial community functioning during plant litter decomposition

Simon A. Schroeter et al.

Summary: The study reveals that functions within decomposer communities are redundantly distributed under different types of litter sources, but their relative expressions are rapidly optimized to address specific litter properties. Furthermore, the decomposer community may be influenced by DOM containing natural antibiotics, leading to specialization towards specific litter sources and decomposition states.

Microbial and Environmental Processes Shape the Link between Organic Matter Functional Traits and Composition

Ang Hu et al.

Summary: This study examines the deterministic and stochastic processes governing the assembly of dissolved organic matter (DOM) molecules in aquatic microcosms. The researchers found that labile or recalcitrant molecules in active fractions are primarily governed by deterministic processes, while stochastic processes are more important for the assembly of molecules within inactive fractions. Interestingly, the importance of deterministic selection increases with global change gradients for recalcitrant molecules in both active and inactive fractions. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the assembly and turnover of organic carbon in a changing world.

Ecological networks of dissolved organic matter and microorganisms under global change

Ang Hu et al.

Summary: The authors developed an ecological network framework and used manipulative field experiments to study the interaction between microbes and dissolved organic matter along global change drivers. They found that temperature and nutrient enrichment influenced the specialization of interactions between organic matter and bacteria, with higher specialization observed in positive interactions and decreased specialization in negative interactions.

Reduced chemodiversity suppresses rhizosphere microbiome functioning in the mono-cropped agroecosystems

Pengfa Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of belowground carbon allocation and chemodiversity of rhizodeposits on microbiome biodiversity and functioning in the rhizosphere ecosystems. The findings showed that the reduction in carbon deposition and chemodiversity during continuous mono-cropping of peanuts suppressed microbial biodiversity and its functions in the rhizosphere ecosystem. This study provides new insights into plant-microbe interactions from the perspective of rhizodeposits chemodiversity and composition.

Viruses direct carbon cycling in lake sediments under global change

Lucas P. P. Braga et al.

Summary: This study shows that viruses play a role in directing carbon cycling in lake sediments and their impact intensifies with changes in water clarity and terrestrial organic matter (tOM) inputs. The study also found that the abundance of viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs) is a better predictor of carbon cycling than metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs).

Unveiling the role of dissolved organic matter on phosphorus sorption and availability in a 5-year manure amended paddy soil

Kejie Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted a 5-year field experiment and demonstrated that partial replacement of chemical P fertilizer with swine manure could maintain high rice yield and soil available P levels, even with reduced total P input. The research suggests that organic manure application can significantly mobilize soil P and increase P availability. The study also found that soil pH and humification degree of DOM directly decreased maximum P adsorption capacity.

Characterization of the Colloidal Properties of Dissolved Organic Matter From Forest Soils

Viktoriia Meklesh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the colloidal properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) extracted from spruce forest soils. The results reveal the presence of two main types of colloids: semi-flexible cylinders and fractal aggregates. The distribution between these two colloids is influenced by the composition of soil organic matter and leaching temperature. These findings have important implications for the reactivity and stability of DOM colloids.

Contribution of periphytic biofilm of paddy soils to carbon dioxide fixation and methane emissions

Sichu Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the contribution of periphytic biofilm (PB) to CO2 and CH4 emissions from rice paddies and found that PB played a significant role in carbon fluxes. PB fixed CO2 and promoted aerobic CH4 oxidation during its growth phase, while it increased soil organic carbon availability and methanogenic microbial community growth during the decay phase, leading to increased CH4 emissions.

The chemodiversity of paddy soil dissolved organic matter is shaped and homogenized by bacterial communities that are orchestrated by geographic distance and fertilizations

Meng Wu et al.

Summary: This study utilized ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry to characterize the soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) chemodiversity and found that geographic distance has a greater impact on DOM diversity than anthropogenic fertilization. Long-term organic fertilization homogenizes DOM chemodiversity, while bacterial community diversity dictates the soil DOM chemodiversity.

Summary: Research findings suggest that with increasing age of Chinese fir plantations, there is a fluctuating trend in the total carbon and dissolved organic carbon content in soil, while nutrient levels significantly increase. The chemical diversity, bacterial richness and diversity in soil also show significant increases with stand age. Additionally, the soil microbial community interacts closely with the compositional variability of DOM in monoculture plantations.

Soil Organic Carbon Enrichment Triggers In Situ Nitrogen Interception by Phototrophic Biofilms at the Soil-Water Interface: From Regional Scale to Microscale

Junzhuo Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant positive correlation between nitrogen immobilized in biofilm biomass and soil organic carbon (SOC) content. High SOC, especially elevated levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), were found to trigger increased bacterial and algal diversity, biomass accumulation, and inorganic nitrogen assimilation in phototrophic biofilms. Metatranscriptomics results showed distinct expression of key proteins related to photosynthesis and nitrogen immobilization at high SOC and DOC levels.

Interaction between CO2-consuming autotrophy and CO2-producing heterotrophy in non-axenic phototrophic biofilms

Patrick Ronan et al.

Summary: This study explored the interaction between autotrophic and heterotrophic activities in a non-axenic phototrophic biofilm. Under autotrophic conditions, the biofilm showed CO2 uptake, but quickly switched to net-heterotrophic growth after the addition of organic carbon sources. Interestingly, distinct regions of heterotrophic and autotrophic metabolism were observed within hours of carbon amendment, and the partitioning appeared reversible with changes in medium flow direction. This insight could help in scaling and industrializing algal growth systems by optimizing biofilm growth and activity.
