Rapid decline of ceftazidime resistance in antibiotic-free and sub-lethal environments is contingent on genetic background

Sara Hernando-Amado et al.

Summary: Trade-offs in antibiotic resistance evolution, such as fitness cost and collateral sensitivity, can be utilized to drive evolution towards antibiotic susceptibility. This study examines the impact of antibiotic-free and sub-lethal environments on declining ceftazidime resistance in different Pseudomonas aeruginosa mutants. The results indicate that decline of resistance is caused by newly acquired mutations rather than the reversal of original ones, and the frequency and degree of decline depend on genetic background.

Summary: This study investigates the positively selected genes in wastewater E. coli and finds that some of them are functionally associated with antibiotic resistance. Mutations associated with antibiotic resistance are also identified. The findings provide novel insights into the mechanisms driving antibiotic resistance.

Summary: This study investigated the role of ArcA in Plesiomonas shigelloides, revealing its impact on growth, motility, biofilm formation, and virulence. ArcA functions as a positive regulator, directly controlling the expression of flaK, rpoN, and cheV genes to regulate the motility of P. shigelloides.

Hormetic dose responses induced by antibiotics in bacteria: A phantom menace to be thoroughly evaluated to address the environmental risk and tackle the antibiotic resistance phenomenon

Ivo Iavicoli et al.

Summary: Environmental contamination of antibiotics due to over or inappropriate use can promote antimicrobial resistance and have adverse impacts on ecosystems and human health. Bacteria exposed to low concentrations of antibiotics in the environment may exhibit hormetic effects, enhancing their resistance to antibiotics.

Exposure to Sublethal Ciprofloxacin Induces Resistance to Ciprofloxacin and Cross-Antibiotics, and Reduction of Fitness, Biofilm Formation, and Apx Toxin Secretion in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae

Fangfang Guo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae developed resistance to quinolone antibiotics, leading to cross-resistance to ampicillin, due to mutations in gyrA and parC genes. The mutants also exhibited reduced bacterial fitness, changes in efflux ability, and alterations in biofilm formation. Additionally, transcription and secretion levels of Apx toxins were significantly reduced in ciprofloxacin-resistant mutants compared to wild-type strains. Further research is needed to explore the impact of genetic and phenotypic characteristics of A. pleuropneumoniae following exposure to subinhibitory concentrations of antibiotics.

Mutations in bdcA and valS Correlate with Quinolone Resistance in Wastewater Escherichia coli

Negin Malekian et al.

Summary: This study identified 13 key mutations that may confer quinolone resistance through a genome-wide association study, including one at the active site and six silent mutations. The results indicate that GWAS can effectively identify resistance mutations without prior knowledge of targets and mode of action.
