Assessing the energy transition in China towards carbon neutrality with a probabilistic framework

Shu Zhang et al.

Summary: A profound transformation is needed in China's energy system to achieve carbon neutrality. The study shows that if emissions peak in 2025, achieving carbon neutrality would require increases in electrification rate, renewable energy usage, solar and wind power, energy storage usage, and negative emissions, as well as a reduction in local air pollutants. The timing of emission peak and carbon budget have significant impacts on decarbonization pathways, technology choices, and transition costs. Early peaking can reduce welfare losses and dependency on carbon removal technologies. Technological breakthroughs, changes in production and consumption patterns, and policy enhancements are urgently needed to achieve carbon neutrality.

Carbon sequestration of Chinese forests from 2010 to 2060 spatiotemporal dynamics and its regulatory strategies

Weixiang Cai et al.

Summary: Forestation is crucial for mitigating global climate change, and existing forests in China play a significant role in carbon sequestration. The carbon sequestration rate of Chinese forests is expected to peak near 2035 and effective management strategies will be needed to maintain a high level of carbon sequestration. However, the contribution of new forestation to additional carbon sequestration is minimal.

Exploring selected pathways to low and zero CO2 emissions in China's iron and steel industry and their impacts on resources and energy

Shaohui Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study that used the MESSAGEix-China iron and steel model to explore pathways for achieving zero CO2 emissions in China's iron and steel industry. The study found that rapid adoption of scrap-based Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)-EAFs steel-making technologies can significantly reduce CO2 emissions by 2060. However, carbon sink or negative emission technologies will still be needed to achieve carbon neutrality. The study also highlights the varying impacts of different technologies on material and energy consumption.

The role of China's terrestrial carbon sequestration 2010-2060 in offsetting energy-related CO2 emissions

Yao Huang et al.

Summary: Energy consumption is the main contributor to CO2 emissions in China. It is crucial to reduce these emissions to achieve national carbon neutrality by 2060. Terrestrial carbon sequestration plays a significant role in offsetting energy-related CO2 emissions. By implementing target-oriented managements, China's terrestrial ecosystems could sequester carbon and offset a substantial portion of energy-related CO2 emissions.

Research on the driving factors and carbon emission reduction pathways of China?s iron and steel industry under the vision of carbon neutrality

Wei Li et al.

Summary: Under the vision of carbon neutrality, China's iron and steel industry urgently needs to achieve low-carbon development. Production capacity and energy efficiency are the essential drivers of CO2 emissions in the industry. The industry should eliminate backward capacity, accelerate the deployment of advanced technologies, and develop more stringent emission reduction measures.

Cost increase in the electricity supply to achieve carbon neutrality in China

Zhenyu Zhuo et al.

Summary: The Chinese government has set goals for carbon neutrality and renewable energy development in the power sector. However, due to the intermittency and increased investment costs of renewable energy, electricity costs will increase. According to the study, a significant amount of wind and solar photovoltaic capacity will be needed by 2050 to achieve carbon neutrality in China's power system, resulting in increased electricity supply costs.

A study of carbon peaking and carbon neutral pathways in China's power sector under a 1.5 °C temperature control target

Gengqi Wu et al.

Summary: This study explores the optimal transition path for China's power sector towards clean and low-carbon transformation, considering dual carbon targets and global warming control. The findings suggest the need to accelerate the low-carbon transition of the power sector under the 1.5 degrees C temperature control target, and address key issues such as coal power phase-out, diversified clean energy system construction, and carbon capture application. The study highlights implications of China's carbon-neutral pathway in the power sector for other countries' clean and low-carbon transitions.

The general equilibrium impacts of carbon tax policy in China: A multi-model comparison

Jing Cao et al.

Summary: We conducted a multi-model comparison of a carbon tax policy in China, finding that while the 2030 NDC target can easily be met in all models, the 2060 carbon neutrality goal cannot be achieved even with the highest carbon tax rates. The 8 CGE models differed substantially in terms of impacts on the macroeconomy, aggregate prices, energy use, carbon reductions, industry level output, and price effects.
