Low-Concentration Air Pollution and Mortality in American Older Adults: A National Cohort Analysis (2001-2017)

Liuhua Shi et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to low levels of PM2.5, NO2, and warm-season O-3 is associated with increased all-cause mortality, with a linear concentration-response relationship for PM2.5 and NO2 below current national standards suggesting no safe threshold for health-harmful pollution levels.

Longitudinal Impacts of PM2.5 Constituents on Adult Mortality in China

Linjiong Liu et al.

Summary: This study assessed the association between long-term exposure to PM2.5 constituents and mortality among Chinese adults, finding a positive correlation. Urban residents, alcohol drinkers, smokers, and men were more susceptible to impact.

Source identification and global implications of black carbon

Erika P. Blanco-Donado et al.

Summary: This study measured the black carbon (BC) concentration in the industrialized urban area of Barranquilla, Colombia, using both mobile and ambient monitoring. The results showed that vehicle traffic emissions were the primary source of BC, although biomass burning also had an influence. The concentration of BC was most affected by vehicle emissions and traffic congestion caused by road and transport infrastructure.

Chronic Exposure to PM2.5 Nitrate, Sulfate, and Ammonium Causes Respiratory System Impairments in Mice

Jushan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the impact of PM2.5 NO3- on respiratory function is most significant, especially in young mice. Exposure to 22 μg/m3 of PM2.5 NO3- led to a decrease in peak expiratory flow and an increase in pulmonary neutrophil infiltration, indicating potential biological mechanisms of PM2.5 NO3- toxicity.

Impact of ultrafine particles and secondary inorganic ions on early onset and progression of amyloid aggregation: Insights from molecular simulations

Samal Kaumbekova et al.

Summary: It is hypothesized that airborne particulate matter and ultrafine particles can influence the early onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease by impacting the aggregation of amyloid beta peptides. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that ultrafine particles affected the aggregation of Aβ(16-21) peptides differently based on the type of ions present in the simulation environment. The presence of certain ions such as SO4-2 and NO3- accelerated the aggregation of Aβ(16-21) peptides in the presence of C-60, while NH4+ ions decelerated their aggregation.
