Community-Scale Wastewater Surveillance of Candida auris during an Ongoing Outbreak in Southern Nevada

Casey Barber et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using wastewater surveillance to detect C. auris in a metropolitan area with reported outbreaks. The results showed a high detection rate of C. auris, reaching 94% in sewersheds serving healthcare facilities involved in the outbreak. Wastewater surveillance can help track the spread of C. auris and serve as an early warning tool for public health action.

Assessment of the Exposure to Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamines and Minor Tobacco Alkaloids in Users of Various Tobacco/Nicotine Products

Gerhard Scherer et al.

Summary: The exposure to tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) and minor tobacco alkaloids in users of electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and nicotine replacement therapy products is minimal compared to smokers and oral tobacco users, but further experimental verification is needed for the formation of N'-nitrosonornicotine from its precursor nornicotine in the presence of thiocyanate.

Quantifying community-wide antimicrobials usage via wastewater-based epidemiology

Elizabeth Holton et al.

Summary: Increasing usage of antimicrobials contributes to the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Wastewater-based epidemiology is a tool to evaluate public health by monitoring chemical and biological markers in wastewater influent, including antibiotics. The study investigated 16 antimicrobials and their metabolites, examining their stability and estimating drug intake using catchment prescription data. Unchanged antimicrobials often overestimated daily intake, attributed to biotransformation or direct disposal of unused drugs. Certain antimicrobials and metabolites performed well in estimating drug intake, while others had limitations due to low prevalence or stability.

Systems biology reveals anatabine to be an NRF2 activator

Dimitris E. Messinis et al.

Summary: Anatabine, a alkaloid found in plants, has shown potential for treating chronic inflammatory diseases. However, its exact mechanisms are still unclear. Through computational analysis, we discovered that anatabine leads to NRF2 translocation and activation of MAPK signaling. We believe that anatabine holds therapeutic potential for NRF2-related diseases.

Use of illicit drugs, alcohol and tobacco in Spain and Portugal during the COVID-19 crisis in 2020 as measured by wastewater-based epidemiology

Andrea Estevez-Danta et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of illicit drugs and licit substances of abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in several locations in Spain and Portugal using wastewater-based epidemiology. The results showed widespread use of substances such as cannabis and cocaine, with limited use of methamphetamine. The study also confirmed two instances of ecstasy dumping in the sewage network.

Anabasine and Anatabine Exposure Attributable to Cigarette Smoking: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2014

Patrick B. Bendik et al.

Summary: This study measured the concentrations of anabasine and anatabine in the urine of U.S. adult smokers and found that the frequency and number of cigarettes smoked per day were associated with the concentrations of these two compounds. The concentrations of anabasine and anatabine in urine samples from daily smokers exceeded the 2 ng/mL cut point. The study suggests that anabasine and anatabine may be useful indicators of recent tobacco use, although their optimal cut point values may be lower than the currently established values. This is the first report of anabasine and anatabine in urine from a representative sample of NHANES study participants, providing a snapshot of exposure levels for smokers during 2013-2014.

Comparison of tobacco use in a university town and a nearby urban area in China by intensive analysis of wastewater over one year period

Zhe Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding smoking patterns in the population is essential for public health policies, and wastewater-based epidemiology is a valuable tool for estimating tobacco use. This study found that tobacco use was higher in urban areas compared to a university town, with the latter maintaining a stable and lower level of usage. The difference in tobacco use between the two areas may be attributed to demographic factors and the implementation of a Tobacco-Free Campus Policy.

Application of wastewater-based epidemiology to investigate stimulant drug, alcohol and tobacco use in Lithuanian communities

Tim Boogaerts et al.

Summary: WBE technology was used to evaluate the consumption patterns of illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco in three Lithuanian cities, revealing high concentrations of methamphetamine and MDMA, significant alcohol use, and discrepancies in tobacco sales data. The findings suggest specific consumption patterns in Lithuania and potentially highlight illegal trade of tobacco products.
