Biogenic iron sulfide functioning as electron-mediating interface to accelerate dissimilatory ferrihydrite reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1

Fei Zhu et al.

Summary: Microbially driven iron and sulfur geochemical cycles are common in subsurface environments. Shewanella species have the ability to reduce Fe(III) minerals and sulfur sources, producing FeS secondary minerals. This study investigated the electron-mediating function of biogenic FeS in promoting the reduction of ferrihydrite by S. oneidensis MR-1 using thiosulfate as sulfur source, demonstrating that biogenic FeS can accelerate interfacial electron transfer between microbes and minerals.

Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria Enhance Abiotic Trichloroethene Reduction by Iron-Sulfur Mineral Precipitates

Erin C. Berns-Herrboldt et al.

Summary: The presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria enhance the reactivity of iron sulfide minerals towards trichloroethene (TCE). Higher ratios of ferrous iron to sulfur result in significant increase in TCE transformation rates when Desulfovibrio vulgaris is present. The characterization of mineral precipitates indicates the presence of mackinawite (FeS), and experimental conditions are within the stability range of FeS. Filtered media without sulfate-reducing bacteria show similar high rates, suggesting the involvement of biogenic redox-active soluble microbial products in maintaining reducing conditions.

Photochemical characterization of paddy water during rice cultivation: Formation of reactive intermediates for As(III) oxidation

Yu Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photochemical processes in paddy water, identifying DOM-D-3*, O-1(2), and OH· as the main reactive intermediates with quantified quantum yields and steady-state concentrations. The findings demonstrated that DOM properties and nitrite concentration were key factors influencing RIs generation, and RIs significantly enhanced arsenite oxidation in paddy water. The study provides new insights into arsenite abiotic transformation pathways in paddy soil and water.

Humic acids promote hydroxyl radical production during transformation of biogenic and abiogenic goethite under redox fluctuation

Huali Yu et al.

Summary: This study shows that the presence of humic acids can enhance the generation of hydroxyl radicals during the anoxic-oxic transition, particularly in biogenic goethite systems. Adsorbed Fe(II) plays a significant role in the generation of hydroxyl radicals. Additionally, the generation of hydroxyl radicals can lead to changes in the molecular weight and composition of humic acids, providing insights into biogeochemical cycles and in-situ remediation at anoxic-oxic interfaces.

Ligand-Enhanced Electron Utilization for Trichloroethylene Degradation by •OH during Sediment Oxygenation

Wenjing Xie et al.

Summary: Specific ligands can greatly enhance contaminant degradation during sediment oxygenation by increasing the utilization efficiency of sediment electrons. The electron utilization efficiency for (OH)-O-center dot production increases with higher ligand concentrations, and is mainly enhanced by changes in sediment surface Fe(II) coordination for low adsorption affinity ligands, and by electron transfer from sediment to dissolved Fe(III)-ligand for high adsorption affinity ligands.

Summary: Laboratory batch experiments demonstrated that various ferrous minerals can facilitate the reduction of TCE under anoxic conditions and generate hydroxyl radicals under oxic conditions. The iron content and reduction potential of the minerals may influence the first-order abiotic dechlorination rate constants of TCE.

High redox potential promotes oxidation of pyrite under neutral conditions: Implications for optimizing pyrite autotrophic denitrification

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of pyrite autotrophic denitrification (PAD) in the presence of EDTA and uncovered the mechanism of anaerobic pyrite oxidation and microbial mineral transformation. The electrochemical threshold for converting pyrite into bioavailable forms in PAD conditions was found to be around 200 mV, and the presence of Fe3+-EDTA complexes accelerated pyrite oxidation. Higher abundances of sulfur- and nitrogen-cycling genera were observed in cultures containing EDTA, indicating increased functional diversity and redundancy in the microbial community. These findings contribute to a better understanding of pyrite oxidation under anaerobic neutral conditions and suggest practical applications for PAD.
