Enteric pathogen reduction targets for onsite non-potable water systems: A critical evaluation

Michael A. Jahne et al.

Summary: In this work, the authors compare and synthesize the log10-reduction targets (LRTs) for pathogens in onsite non-potable water systems (ONWS) to inform the selection of pathogen LRTs. The results show that there were minor differences in LRTs for human enteric viruses and parasitic protozoa between 2017 and 2021 efforts, despite differences in pathogen characterization methods. The greatest differences were observed in stormwater due to the use of municipal wastewater data and different reference pathogens.

Distributions of waterborne pathogens in raw wastewater based on a 14-month, multi-site monitoring campaign

Brian M. Pecson et al.

Summary: The California State Water Resources Control Board is the first regulatory body in the United States to develop statewide regulations for direct potable reuse (DPR). They conducted a pathogen monitoring campaign to better understand the concentration of human pathogens in raw wastewater. By optimizing methods and analyzing over 120 samples from five wastewater treatment plants, they obtained a high-quality dataset.

Risk-based treatment targets for onsite non-potable water systems using new pathogen data

Brian Pecson et al.

Summary: The study updated risk-based LRTs for multiple pathogens and an expanded set of end-uses, with LRT requirements typically within 1-log 10 of 2017 LRTs regardless of different approaches used. Cost and footprint estimates provide detailed information on implementing ONWS.

Disability-Adjusted Life Year Frameworks for Comparing Health Impacts Associated with Mycobacterium avium, Trihalomethanes, and Haloacetic Acids in a Building Plumbing System

Dienye L. Tolofari et al.

Summary: The DALY approach was used to analyze the health risks in cold and hot water building plumbing, focusing on nontuberculous mycobacteria, total trihalomethanes, and total haloacetic acids. The study suggests that efforts to reduce disinfection byproduct-related health risks should be considered, as the annual DALY of bladder cancer was estimated to be greater than that of MAC pulmonary disease by 5 orders of magnitude. The DALY impacts of both THMs and HAAs in buildings were higher than the reported threshold, and water quality changes in building plumbing increased DALY impacts for microbial risks but decreased impacts for chemical risks.

Estimate of Burden and Direct Healthcare Cost of Infectious Waterborne Disease in the United States

Sarah A. Collier et al.

Summary: The provision of safe drinking water in the United States is an important public health achievement, but new challenges have emerged with waterborne diseases. Approximately 7.15 million waterborne illnesses occur annually in the US, with most hospitalizations and deaths caused by biofilm-associated pathogens. The total direct healthcare costs incurred from waterborne infectious diseases reach $3.33 billion annually.
