Taking control of microplastics data: A comparison of control and blank data correction methods

Amanda L. Dawson et al.

Summary: Significant progress has been made in the harmonisation of methods for microplastic analysis, but the analysis and interpretation of control data has been overlooked. Current consensus on the best method for utilizing control data is lacking, resulting in arbitrary use of methods. This study tested 51 methods and found that only 7 methods showed promise in correcting background contamination, suggesting LOD/LOQ methods or statistical analysis comparing means should be used in future microplastic studies.

The Sub-Ice Algal Communities of the Barents Sea Pack Ice: Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Biomass and Species

Else Nost Hegseth et al.

Summary: This work summarizes ice algal studies conducted between 1986 and 2012, including biomass and species distribution. The majority of the biomass was found in loosely attached sub-ice algal layers, with the highest species diversity in medium-thick ice of 30-80 cm. Nitzschia frigida was the most common species, and its dominance was positively correlated with ice thickness.

Nanoplastics measurements in Northern and Southern polar ice

Dusan Materic et al.

Summary: It has been established that various anthropogenic contaminants have already reached all the world's pristine locations, including the polar regions. Plastic pollution has been shown as a durable novel pollutant, and, since recently, smaller and smaller plastics particles have been identified in various environments (air, water and soil). However, far less is known about the plastics debris that fragmented to the sub-micrometre size (nanoplastics).

Microplastic ingestion in zooplankton from the Fram Strait in the Arctic

Zara L. R. Botterell et al.

Summary: Research has shown that Arctic zooplankton have ingested microplastics, with the smaller-sized microplastics being selected for by the zooplankton. The ingestion of high concentrations of microplastics could have negative effects on the growth, development, and fecundity of the zooplankton. As global plastic consumption increases and climate change reduces sea ice cover, the Arctic could be exposed to further plastic pollution, putting additional strain on this fragile ecosystem.

The Arctic has warmed nearly four times faster than the globe since 1979

Mika Rantanen et al.

Summary: Analyses of observations and climate simulations suggest that Arctic Amplification has been stronger than expected and underestimated in climate models. The warming in the Arctic has been nearly four times faster than the global average over the past 43 years, which is a higher ratio than previously reported. This finding indicates the urgency and severity of Arctic warming.

Micro(nano)plastics sources, fate, and effects: What we know after ten years of research

Steve Allen et al.

Summary: The last decade has seen significant advancements in micro(nano)plastic (MnP) research, revealing the extent and impact of MnP pollution globally. Microplastic particles have been found in various environmental compartments, including freshwater, snow, ice, soil, terrestrial biota, air, and ocean spray, causing harmful effects on numerous species, including humans. The development of new techniques has enabled the analysis of plastic pollution in the nano size range.

Plastic pollution in the Arctic

Melanie Bergmann et al.

Summary: Plastic debris and microplastics are widespread in the Arctic, even in areas without human activity. They come from various sources, both local and distant, and are transported to the Arctic by ocean currents, atmospheric transport, and rivers. Once in the Arctic, plastic pollution accumulates and affects local ecosystems.

Detection limits are central to improve reporting standards when using Nile red for microplastic quantification

Holly A. Nel et al.

Summary: The efficacy of Nile red for microplastic detection was evaluated in this study, with results showing that particle pixel brightness varied between polymer type, shape, size, color and staining procedure. A PPB threshold limit of 100 a.u. was suggested to improve detection accuracy and reduce analysis time.

Global patterns for the spatial distribution of floating microfibers: Arctic Ocean as a potential accumulation zone

Andre R. A. Lima et al.

Summary: Most studies underestimate the amount of microfibers in the marine environment, highlighting the need for further research. The interaction among surface water temperature, salinity, currents and winds plays a crucial role in governing microfiber distribution patterns. Predictions show varying accumulation patterns of microfibers in different regions of the global ocean.

Evidence of free tropospheric and long-range transport of microplastic at Pic du Midi Observatory

S. Allen et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of atmospheric microplastic pollution at the Pic du Midi Observatory, indicating free long range transport in the troposphere. The results show evidence of true free tropospheric transport of microplastic particles <50 μm over 4 summer months at an altitude of 2877 meters. Analysis of air/particle history modelling suggests potential global aerosol microplastic transport through intercontinental and trans-oceanic pathways.

The global threat from plastic pollution

Matthew MacLeo et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution that accumulates and is poorly reversible in the environment can have significant negative impacts such as changes to ecosystems, biological effects, and societal impacts. Therefore, a global response is needed to rapidly reduce plastic emissions through reductions in consumption of virgin plastic materials and internationally coordinated waste management strategies.

MOSAiC drift expedition from October 2019 to July 2020: sea ice conditions from space and comparison with previous years

Thomas Krumpen et al.

Summary: This study combines satellite data products to provide a first and general overview of the physical sea ice conditions along the drift of the international MOSAiC expedition and finds that the drift was faster than the climatological mean and the ice was thinner than in previous years. Despite little variability, ice concentration, lead frequency, and snow thickness showed close to long-term mean values. Ice conditions became more variable with spring approaching, and deformation events were higher in summer than in winter. The study also observed thinner ice within 50 km compared to 100 km radius of the Central Observatory and earlier formation of large melt ponds on the MOSAiC floe.
