Long-term (1990-2019) monitoring of forest cover changes in the humid tropics

C. Vancutsem et al.

Summary: Accurate characterization of changes in tropical moist forests is crucial for conservation policies and understanding their contribution to global carbon fluxes. Degradation of these forests plays a key role as a precursor to deforestation, and without reducing disturbance rates, undisturbed forests in large tropical regions may disappear entirely by 2050. Reinforcing actions are needed to prevent initial degradation that leads to forest clearance in 45% of cases.

What determines the effectiveness of national protected area networks?

Payal Shah et al.

Summary: Over 15% of global terrestrial area is protected, with a goal to increase coverage to 30% by 2030. Evaluation of national PA networks established between 2000 and 2012 shows they reduced deforestation by 72%, with strictly protected PAs performing better. Lower agricultural activity, higher economic growth, and better governance are factors most strongly associated with greater country-level PA effectiveness.

Use Forests or Lose Them? Regulated Timber Extraction and Tree Cover Loss in Mexico

Allen Blackman et al.

Summary: The research suggests that awarding timber extraction permits to communal land-holding organizations in Mexico does not have a significant overall effect on tree cover loss. Statistically significant effects were only observed in specific subgroups of forest management units, influenced by factors such as poverty levels and opportunity costs of retaining forest cover.
