Why was the heat wave in the Yangtze River valley abnormally intensified in late summer 2022?

Daquan Zhang et al.

Summary: A record-breaking heat wave hit the Yangtze River valley in the summer of 2022, causing severe social and economic losses. This study investigated the physical mechanisms responsible for the intensification of the heat event in late summer under the background of a La Nina event. The intensification of the heat event was directly related to the strengthening and westward extension of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH).

Extremely hot East Asia and flooding western South Asia in the summer of 2022 tied to reversed flow over Tibetan Plateau

Chao He et al.

Summary: In the summer of 2022, unprecedented heat wave occurred along the Yangtze River Valley in East Asia, while unprecedented flood occurred over western South Asia. Analysis of observational data shows that anomalous zonal flow over the Tibetan Plateau explains a major fraction of these extreme events.

Causes of the persistent merging of the western North Pacific subtropical high and the Iran high during late July 2022

Ruidan Chen et al.

Summary: During late July 2022, the merging of the western North Pacific subtropical high and the Iran high resulted in concurrent extreme climate events over multiple regions. This extraordinary phenomenon is caused by two extreme anticyclonic anomalies centered over the WNP-South Asia and Central Asia. The WNP-South Asia anticyclonic anomaly is related to La Nina SSTA pattern and the enhanced convection over the tropical eastern Indian Ocean, while the Central Asia anticyclonic anomaly is associated with the Silk Road pattern propagating eastward along the westerly jet.

The roles of global warming and Arctic Oscillation in the winter 2020 extremes in East Asia

So-Hee Kim et al.

Summary: The 2019/20 winter was exceptionally warm globally and in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in East Asia, due to the extreme positive Arctic Oscillation (AO) event and global warming. The AO played a significant role in causing temperature extremes in northern and eastern East Asia, while the contribution was negligible in southern East Asia. The findings suggest that the observed anomalies were a combined effect of the extreme positive AO event and global warming.

The role of atmospheric dynamics and large-scale topography in driving heatwaves

Bernat Jimenez-Esteve et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamical processes involved in the life cycle of heatwaves occurring at different latitudes. The results show that blocking and Rossby-wave packets play important roles in midlatitude heatwaves, while topography along the midlatitude jet has a significant impact on the heatwave distribution around the planet. Identifying the key processes driving heatwaves can improve the prediction and representation of extreme events.

Interannual Impact of the North Atlantic Tripole SST Mode on the Surface Potential Vorticity Over the Tibetan Plateau During Boreal Summer

Chen Sheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of the North Atlantic tripole sea surface temperature on the surface potential vorticity over the Tibetan Plateau during summer, revealing a mechanism that affects the East Asian and Indian summer monsoons. The results suggest that a positive phase of the North Atlantic mode can intensify the thermal and dynamic forcings of the Tibetan Plateau through its impact on the surface potential vorticity.

The 2021 western North America heat wave among the most extreme events ever recorded globally

Vikki Thompson et al.

Summary: In June 2021, a unprecedented heat wave occurred in western North America, far exceeding the previously observed temperature range. By using a novel assessment method, it is found that this heat wave was extremely intense, exceeding four standard deviations. Only five more extreme heat waves have been recorded globally since 1960. It is also discovered that the statistical distribution of heat extremes increases over time, indicating a shift in the distribution mean due to climate change.

Combined Effects of Tropical Indo-Pacific-Atlantic SST Anomalies on Record-Breaking Floods over Central-North China in September 2021

Boqi Liu et al.

Summary: This study attributes the continuous heavy rainfall in central northern China in September 2021 to the westward inland intrusion of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH). Both case study and statistical analysis indicate that sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the tropical Indo-Pacific-Atlantic Oceans significantly affect the westward extension of the WNPSH and rainfall in central northern China. Additionally, the warmer tropical Atlantic anchors the anomalous WNPSH and rainfall. A statistical model based on August tropical SSTAs can predict the westward extension of the WNPSH in September, suggesting that tropical Indo-Pacific-Atlantic SSTAs possibly prolong the rainy season of the East Asian summer monsoon.

Southeast China Extreme Drought Event in August 2019: Context of Coupling of Midlatitude and Tropical Systems

Jilan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the synergistic effects of midlatitude and tropical circulation on an extreme drought in Southeast China in August 2019, emphasizing the coupling and locking of two cyclones at different latitudes. The results further confirm the connection between the Tibetan Plateau and the western North Pacific with tropical convection and precipitation in Southeast China, and uncover the impact mechanisms of the North Atlantic tripole sea surface temperature anomaly pattern and the TP precipitation deficiency on precipitation in Northeast China.

Exceptionally prolonged extreme heat waves over South China in early summer 2020: The role of warming in the tropical Indian Ocean

Dingrui Cao et al.

Summary: South China experienced unprecedented extreme heat wave events in early summer 2020, which were primarily induced by abnormal tropospheric circulation and the displacement of western Pacific subtropical high and South Asia high. The warming of tropical Indian Ocean sea surface temperature played a crucial role in these events.

Variations in Summer Extreme High-Temperature Events over Northern Asia and the Possible Mechanisms

H. A. I. X. U. HONG et al.

Summary: This study explores the interannual and interdecadal variations in extreme high-temperature events over northern Asia and the associated mechanisms. It finds that on an interannual scale, the frequency of these events is related to local atmospheric factors and solar radiation, while on an interdecadal scale, it is influenced by the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation and global warming. The study also identifies teleconnection patterns and sea surface temperature patterns that further contribute to the variations in extreme high-temperature events.
