How much can changes in the agro-food system reduce agricultural nitrogen losses to the environment? Example of a temperate-Mediterranean gradient

Josette Garnier et al.

Summary: Ammonia (NH3) volatilization, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, and nitrate (NO3-) leaching from agriculture cause severe environmental hazards. Research studies and mitigation strategies have mostly focused on one of these nitrogen (N) losses at a time, often without an integrated view of the agro-food system. By analyzing N fluxes through the agro-food systems of a Temperate-Mediterranean gradient (France, Spain, and Portugal), this study shows that NH3, N2O, and NO3 loss patterns reflect the structure of the whole agro-food system. The study also explores two future scenarios and finds that the agro-ecological scenario has the potential for much greater reductions in NH3, N2O, and NO3 emissions compared to the EU-Farm-to-Fork scenario.

The imbalance of food and biofuel markets amid Ukraine-Russia crisis: A systems thinking perspective

Zahra Shams Esfandabadi et al.

Summary: The Ukraine war has had a significant impact on food and energy systems, leading to food shortages and increased prices. Lowering biofuel mandates could result in higher petroleum demand and supply issues. Transitioning from first-generation biofuels to higher generations could address food security concerns and promote sustainable development.

Use of the Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 Satellites for Water Quality Monitoring: An Early Warning Tool in the Mar Menor Coastal Lagoon

Isabel Caballero et al.

Summary: This study examines the evolution of water quality descriptors in Mar Menor, the largest coastal lagoon in the Western Mediterranean Sea, during the ecological crisis in 2021. The use of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 satellites provides precise results of water quality variables, allowing for the identification of critical areas and early warning systems. The methodology proves to be suitable for capturing the spatiotemporal distribution of water quality variables in a cost-effective way.

Relocate 10 billion livestock to reduce harmful nitrogen pollution exposure for 90% of China's population

Zhaohai Bai et al.

Summary: Spatial planning and policy can play a crucial role in reducing human exposure to ammonia pollution in China's livestock sector. By relocating animals according to crop-livestock integration criteria, nitrogen emissions can be significantly reduced, leading to a decrease in the number of people exposed to high ammonia emissions. Therefore, spatial planning serves as a powerful tool in combating nitrogen pollution and minimizing human exposure to ammonia.

Best management practices scenario analysis to reduce agricultural nitrogen loads and sediment yield to the semiarid Mar Menor coastal lagoon (Spain)

Cristina Puertes et al.

Summary: Agriculture is a major source of diffuse pollution, with nitrogen and sediment pollution being its main environmental impacts on water bodies. Best management practices and water quality models are effective tools for preventing and minimizing water pollution. This study evaluates the impact of various management practices on nitrogen, sediment loads, and crop yield.

Influence of the Water Source on the Carbon Footprint of Irrigated Agriculture: A Regional Study in South-Eastern Spain

Bernardo Martin-Gorriz et al.

Summary: This study highlights the significant impact of different water sources on agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint. Replacing traditional water supply methods with desalinated seawater may lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and a decrease in carbon balance, but even in this scenario, irrigated agriculture can still act as a CO2 sink.

Nitrogen dynamics in cropping systems under Mediterranean climate: a systemic analysis

Luis Lassaletta et al.

Summary: In Mediterranean cropping systems, sustainable nitrogen management requires practices to be specifically adapted to the local agro-environmental characteristics, with a special emphasis on water availability for rainfed and irrigated systems. This approach should also include a systemic analysis of nitrogen input into the territory driven by the configuration of the agro-food system.

Nitrogen inputs best predict farm field nitrate leaching in the Willamette Valley, Oregon

J. E. Compton et al.

Summary: Nitrate leaching is a significant issue contributing to groundwater and surface water contamination in agricultural areas, with notable variations in crop-specific leaching rates. The study in the southern Willamette Valley revealed that most leaching occurred during fall and winter, with an average NUE of 57% across all sites and years. Optimizing N inputs could help in reducing groundwater nitrate contamination.

Long-term trajectories of the C footprint of N fertilization in Mediterranean agriculture (Spain, 1860-2018)

Eduardo Aguilera et al.

Summary: The use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers in Spanish agriculture has led to significant increases in GHG emissions, particularly in the Mediterranean region. The doubling of direct N2O EFs was driven by the expansion of irrigation, synthetic fertilizers, and liquid manure. Despite large energy efficiency gains in industrial fertilizer production, these benefits were offset by changes in the fertilizer mix and a tenfold increase in downstream N2O emissions.

Greenhouse gas emissions from Mediterranean agriculture: Evidence of unbalanced research efforts and knowledge gaps

Eduardo Aguilera et al.

Summary: Research on greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration in the Mediterranean biome found that while emissions from livestock production are nearly half of those from crop production, mitigation efforts are mainly focused on crops. This mismatch indicates significant research gaps, especially in grassland and strategic crop types, highlighting the need for a strategic plan to address this imbalance.
