Taylan Dolu et al.

Summary: The occurrence and behavior of pharmaceuticals, especially in sewage sludge, have become a topic of great concern due to the potential adverse effects. In this study, the occurrence and seasonal variations of 45 pharmaceutical compounds in thickened and digested sludge were investigated. The removal patterns of both parent compounds and metabolites in anaerobic digesters were found to be similar, although the capacities for sorption onto sewage sludges varied. The treatment performances of full-scale anaerobic digesters varied for different pharmaceutical subgroups.

From the pills to environment - Prediction and tracking of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug concentrations in wastewater

Katarzyna Kolecka et al.

Summary: The extent of pharmaceutical pollution in the environment requires more automatic and integrated solutions. This study focused on the correlation between sales data of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and their concentration in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The findings suggest that a significant amount of sold NSAIDs are improperly disposed into the sewage system, emphasizing the need for future predictions and risk assessments to consider this factor.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic in the context of the human and the environment

Danuta Wojcieszynska et al.

Summary: Since 2019, the world has been greatly influenced by the successive waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, researchers have made discoveries about the structure, action, short- and long-term effects of the virus, and have developed treatments. While the pandemic has undoubtedly impacted people's lives, there is also growing attention on its effects on the environment. This review analyzed the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for treating SARS-CoV-2 symptoms, their effects on the human body and aquatic organisms, and their presence in the environment. The findings highlight the need for further research and report on the environmental impact of NSAIDs during the pandemic.

S. Keerthanan et al.

Summary: The article reviews the occurrence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment and their impacts on plants, as well as the potential risks to human health. It highlights the differential uptake and bioaccumulation of PPCPs in plants, with a focus on the factors influencing plant uptake and translocation. Future research should address the mechanisms of plant uptake and translocation of PPCPs and strategies to reduce human health risks associated with consumption of contaminated plants.

Pharmacology-informed prediction of the risk posed to fish by mixtures of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the environment

Philip Marmon et al.

Summary: The presence of NSAIDs in the aquatic environment raises concerns about potential adverse effects on wild fish populations, prompting calls for stricter regulation, especially for diclofenac. Current environmental risk assessment methods lack consideration of the mechanistic and pharmacological aspects of NSAIDs, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive approach. This study introduces a framework that integrates pharmacological insights to predict the risk of NSAID mixtures on fish, showing significant mechanistic promiscuity and suggesting a non-negligible risk in specific scenarios.

Pharmaceutical and transformation products during unplanned water reuse: Insights into natural attenuation, plant uptake and human health impact under field conditions

Raffaella Meffe et al.

Summary: The study reveals that agricultural soils irrigated with surface water contaminated by wastewater treatment plant effluents can lead to the accumulation of pharmaceuticals in plants, posing a potential health risk to human consumption. While the concentrations of pharmaceuticals in soil are high, natural attenuation processes are observed during soil infiltration, reducing the levels of contaminants transferred to crops.

A review on environmental occurrence, toxicity and microbial degradation of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

Aishwarya Rastogi et al.

Summary: In recent years, NSAIDs have emerged as a new class of pollutants due to their incomplete degradation in wastewater treatment plants and potential physiological effects in humans even at low doses. Studies have shown that although NSAID concentrations in natural waters are typically low, untreated wastewater discharge can lead to higher concentrations, highlighting the importance of effective wastewater treatment. Furthermore, research has indicated that certain bacterial strains have the ability to degrade NSAIDs, emphasizing their crucial role in the degradation process.

Solar photocatalytic degradation of ibuprofen with a magnetic catalyst: Effects of parameters, efficiency in effluent, mechanism and toxicity evolution

Han Gong et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the degradation of ibuprofen (IBP) in different water types using an environmental-friendly photocatalytic process with a magnetic catalyst CoFe2O4/TiO2 mediated by solar light. Results showed that hydroxyl radicals and photo-holes contributed to IBP decay, with different anions showing varying effects on the degradation process. Addition of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate (PS) significantly enhanced removal efficiency, while the introduction of hydrogen peroxide slowed down the reaction. Thirteen transformation products were identified, with five of them being newly reported.
