Source apportionment of indoor PM2.5 at a residential urban background site in Malta

Renato Camilleri et al.

Summary: In this study, receptor modelling was used to identify and quantify the main sources of indoor PM2.5 in an urban background site in Malta. The results showed that both outdoor and indoor sources contributed to indoor PM2.5, with cooking and e-cigarette smoking being the main contributors. A unique finding was the presence of a fireworks factor in indoor PM2.5, which was of concern due to the toxic elements associated with fireworks.

Health risk assessment and source apportionment of PM2.5-bound toxic elements in the industrial city of Siheung, Korea

Young Su Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the emission sources and health risks of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Siheung, Republic of Korea, a middle-sized industrial city. By using a positive matrix factorization model, 10 sources of PM2.5 were identified, and the health risks associated with each source were assessed. The study found that the risks from coal combustion, heavy oil industry, and traffic exceeded the benchmark, highlighting the need for risk reduction measures. Non-carcinogenic risks were found to be low, but future research should consider additional factors.

Summary: This study monitored the levels of PAHs and PBDEs in urban road dust in Tianjin, China, and assessed the health risks to the local population. The findings showed that PAHs and PBDEs posed higher health risks to children than adults. Petroleum, petroleum combustion, and biomass/coal combustion were identified as major sources of PAHs, while BDE209 was the dominant PBDE congener.

Methods for the assessment of health risk induced by contaminants in atmospheric particulate matter: a review

Marc Fadel et al.

Summary: Air pollution is a significant issue for human health, leading to over 7 million premature deaths each year from indoor and outdoor pollution. Exposure to particulate matter is associated with adverse health effects in the short and long term. Evaluating the health risks caused by exposure to contaminants in particulate matter is challenging due to the presence of multiple pollutants and the multiple causes of observed diseases. This review discusses advanced methods for assessing cancer and non-cancer risks from exposure to specific contaminants in particulate matter, including ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact, as well as different age categories of the population.

Climate Change and Weather Extremes in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East

G. Zittis et al.

Summary: Observation-based and modeling studies have identified the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region as a prominent climate change hotspot. The region's greenhouse gas emissions are rapidly increasing, leading to faster warming compared to other inhabited regions. Projected future trends include continued warming and an increase in extreme weather events. The region's vulnerability to climate change highlights the importance of adaptation and resilience strategies for sectors at risk.

Updated World Health Organization Air Quality Guidelines Highlight the Importance of Non-anthropogenic PM2.5

Sidhant J. Pai et al.

Summary: The recent update by the World Health Organization indicates that over 90% of the global population is exposed to PM2.5 concentrations that exceed their guidelines. Even under extreme abatement scenarios, more than half of the world's population will still experience PM2.5 exposures above the recommended level. A speciated aerosol exposure guideline is suggested for region-specific air quality management decisions and health-burden estimates.

Summary: This study reveals that in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, the main sources of ambient particulate matter are secondary aerosols and dust, as well as a variety of mixed sources including traffic, industry, biomass burning, and sea salt. Iran has the highest number of studies on specific sources of PM, while several countries in the region lack research on this topic.

Characteristics of chemical composition and source apportionment of PM2.5 during a regional haze episode in the yangtze river delta, china

Yiwei Diao et al.

Summary: The sources of PM2.5 in urban haze pollution vary at different stages, and there is evident regional transport of pollutants between urban agglomerations. In a regional haze episode in Nanjing, China, PM2.5 and its major chemical compositions were continuously measured. Principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were used to determine the primary sources, with PMF providing more refined results. The contribution of each source by PMF was analyzed, and the distribution characteristics of air pollutants differed in different haze stages.

Linking Switzerland's PM10 and PM2.5 oxidative potential (OP) with emission sources

Stuart K. Grange et al.

Summary: Particulate matter (PM) is a major air pollutant with significant health effects. Current monitoring methods do not provide information on the biological toxicity of PM. A sampling campaign in Switzerland showed that oxidative potential (OP) of PM varies over time and space. Metal components and specific organic tracers from wood combustion were identified as the most important factors in explaining and predicting OP. Controlling anthropogenic road traffic and wood burning sources can effectively reduce OP and potential biological harm.
