Bioinspiration synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles using eggshells as a calcium source: Evaluation of Congo red dye adsorption potential

Ramesh Vinayagam et al.

Summary: Hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAp NPs) were synthesized using Muntingia calabura leaf extract and eggshell waste. The synthesized HAp NPs were irregular rod-like in shape and showed the formation of hydroxyapatite. XRD and TGA studies confirmed their polycrystalline nature and high thermostability. The coated plant phytochemicals onto HAp NPs were stable according to FTIR analysis. The optimized adsorption of Congo red using HAp NPs showed high efficiency, following a pseudo-secondorder model and Freundlich isotherm indicating chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic studies suggested that the adsorption process was feasible, exothermic, and spontaneous. The maximum adsorption capacity of HAp NPs was superior to other reported adsorbents. The results indicate that the synthesized HAp NPs have great potential in developing novel adsorbents for dye removal from wastewater streams.
