Detection of microplastic fibers tangle in deep-water rose shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris, Lucas, 1846) in the northeastern Mediterranean Sea

Nebil Yucel

Summary: Microplastic pollution in marine environments has become a major global concern. This study examined the microplastic pollution status of two regions in the northeastern Mediterranean Sea using deep-water rose shrimp. Microplastic particles were detected in all specimens, with higher occurrence and accumulation in the Samandag region. Polyethylene was identified as the most common polymer type. These results provide valuable insight into microplastic pollution across different trophic levels.

Weathering pathways and protocols for environmentally relevant microplastics and nanoplastics: What are we missing?

Olubukola S. Alimi et al.

Summary: Most studies on microplastics have been conducted using pristine particles, neglecting the effects of weathering. Current weathering protocols are not sufficient for microplastics research. There is a need to use environmentally relevant microplastics and critically assess the appropriateness of weathering methods in future research efforts.

Characterizing photochemical ageing processes of microplastic materials using multivariate analysis of infrared spectra

Misha Zvekic et al.

Summary: Research has shown that under different lighting conditions, plastics undergo photochemical weathering on their surfaces, with principal component analysis able to simultaneously distinguish between different types of plastics and levels of photochemical weathering. Compared to the carbonyl index, a multivariate approach is more suitable for assessing surface changes in plastics. Outdoor weathering occurs 5-12 times slower than artificial exposure, depending on the type of plastic and light source used.

Can aged microplastics be transport vectors for organic micropollutants? - Sorption and phytotoxicity tests

Mariana N. Miranda et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of plastic aging on the sorption capacity and behavior of microplastics. The results show that aged microplastics have a higher sorption capacity for certain organic micropollutants compared to pristine microplastics. Phytotoxicity tests suggest that the behavior of microplastics in soil-plant systems is relatively stable and does not have significant toxic effects.

Adsorption behaviors of triclosan by non-biodegradable and biodegradable microplastics: Kinetics and mechanism

Ke Shi et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution is a serious and widespread issue in the global environment. This study investigated the adsorption behaviors of triclosan (TCS) by non-biodegradable polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) and found that aged microplastics exhibited a stronger adsorption capacity for TCS. The results provide new insights into the potential risks of TCS as an environmental contaminant and the role of both non-biodegradable and biodegradable microplastics as vectors.

Factors affecting microplastic accumulation by wild fish: A case study in the Nandu River, South China

Yuling Chen et al.

Summary: Monitoring microplastic pollution in the digestive tracts of fish in the Nandu River, China, this study found that 90.5% of the examined fish contained microplastics, with an average of 3.20 +/- 2.60 particles per fish. The size of the fish, feeding habits, and living habitats did not affect the abundance of microplastics. The study suggests that more attention should be given to the negative effects of microplastics on small fish, and improvements in microplastic risk assessment methods are needed.

Hongwei Luo et al.

Summary: Microplastics are an emerging pollutant of global concern, and the additives within them may also have harmful effects on the environment. Through aging, these additives can be released from microplastics into the environment, increasing the ecotoxicological risk. Studying the functions and environmental behaviors of these additives helps to assess the environmental impact and potential risks of microplastics.

Summary: This study evaluates the adsorption of persistent micropollutants by microplastics and finds that polymer type, size, age, and natural organic matter fouling all play a role in the adsorption process. Additionally, micropollutants' hydrophobicity and the presence of NOM also affect the adsorption capacity of microplastics.

Assessment and prediction of the effect of ageing on the adsorption of nonylphenol in black carbon-sediment systems

Guanghuan Cheng et al.

Summary: Black carbon (BC) is a promising sediment amendment with considerable adsorption capacity for hydrophobic organic pollutants, but its reliability in natural sediments needs further evaluation. The ageing process and proportion of BC were found to affect the adsorption capacity of BC-sediment systems, with rice straw black carbon (RC) demonstrating higher efficiency than fly ash black carbon (FC) for nonylphenol (NP) pollution control in sediment. Recommendations for future research include considering more factors and conditions to build a more accurate and reliable predictive model for BC-sediment systems.

Nina Maria Ainali et al.

Summary: The study investigated the aging characteristics of four commonly used polymers under UV irradiation and provided insight into the impact of UV exposure on the physical and chemical properties of the polymers. Various analytical methods revealed the significant effects of UV irradiation on the crystalline and thermal properties of the polymers, as well as the formation of new functional groups. It was also found that UV exposure altered the ratio of low molecular weight compounds to higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and impacted the reliability of microplastic quantification in real samples.
