Air Pollution and the Risk of Dementia: The Rotterdam Study

Tosca O. E. de Crom et al.

Summary: According to the Rotterdam Study, exposure to air pollution has been suggested to be associated with an increased risk of dementia. However, this study found no clear evidence for an association between exposure to air pollution and the risk of dementia or cognitive decline.

Time-lagged relationships between a decade of air pollution exposure and first hospitalization with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias

Daniel Mork et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) present significant health challenges in the aging population. A retrospective cohort study of 27+ million Medicare enrollees in the US found a link between air pollution exposure, particularly to PM2.5 and NO2, and increased odds of first hospitalization with ADRD. The association was observed up to 10 years prior to admission and even at pollution levels below current standards. These findings highlight the importance of identifying modifiable risk factors like air pollution exposure for prevention or delaying the progression of ADRD.

Alzheimer's disease-like cortical atrophy mediates the effect of air pollution on global cognitive function

Jaelim Cho et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of air pollution on Alzheimer's disease-specific brain structural pathologies and whether this effect leads to poorer cognitive function. The findings suggest that air pollution exposures may induce AD-like cortical atrophy and lead to poorer cognitive function in dementia-free adults.

Incident dementia and long-term exposure to constituents of fine particle air pollution: A national cohort study in the United States

Liuhua Shi et al.

Summary: Growing evidence suggests that long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and its major constituents is significantly associated with higher rates of incident dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Specific constituents related to traffic and fossil fuel combustion, such as BC, OM, and SO42-, showed the strongest associations.

Summary: By analyzing the clinical features and patterns of brain atrophy in patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment, this study found that the CSF p/t-tau ratio may be useful in identifying those at higher risk of subsequent conversion to dementia, especially in patients with negative CSF amyloid biomarkers.

Federico Zagnoli et al.

Summary: This review and meta-analysis assessed the association between environmental greenness and the risk of dementia and cognitive impairment. The findings suggested a slight inverse correlation between greenness and dementia at intermediate exposure levels, but no correlation at high levels. However, the study had some methodological limitations.

Sex differences and the role of education in cognitive ageing: analysis of two UK-based prospective cohort studies

Mikaela Bloomberg et al.

Summary: The study found that education level plays a role in influencing sex differences in cognitive aging. Women generally performed better in memory tasks, while men had faster memory decline. Sex differences in fluency varied by birth cohort and education level. The findings suggest that reducing educational disparities between sexes could help alleviate sex differences in dementia risk and cognitive decline in the future.
