'Plasticosis': Characterising macro- and microplastic-associated fibrosis in seabird tissues

Hayley S. Charlton-Howard et al.

Summary: As the biota are increasingly exposed to plastic pollution, it is important to closely examine the sub-lethal impacts of plastic ingestion. This study focuses on Flesh-footed Shearwaters, which are highly impacted by plastic ingestion, and finds evidence of plastic-induced fibrosis in their proventriculus (stomach). Plastic presence is associated with scar tissue formation and tissue structure changes, highlighting the unique pathological properties of plastics and raising concerns for other species impacted by plastic ingestion. This study also suggests the presence of a novel plastic-induced fibrotic disease called 'Plasticosis'.

The impact of marine debris on cetaceans with consideration of plastics generated by the COVID-19 pandemic

Sonja Mareike Eisfeld-Pierantonio et al.

Summary: The accumulation of human-derived debris in the oceans, particularly plastics, poses a serious threat to marine wildlife, including cetaceans. There is evidence that a significant percentage of cetacean species are affected by marine debris, with different species showing variations in their interactions with plastics based on their diving and feeding strategies. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the increase in marine plastic pollution, with potential consequences for marine life. The lack of assessments on the population-level effects of marine debris is a concern, particularly for small populations already under pressure from other anthropogenic activities. It is important to recognize that marine debris is not just a pollution, economic, and social issue, but also a welfare concern for the species and populations involved.

Global marine litter research 2015-2020: Geographical and methodological trends

Marthe Larsen Haarr et al.

Summary: A systematic review of research on marine macrolitter densities from 2015 to 2020 revealed knowledge gaps in the field. Data scarcity exists in regions mismanaging plastic waste, particularly in the high and deep seas. Lack of standardization hinders assessment and comparison of litter densities. The review highlights the need for survey design development and consideration of ecological research techniques.

30 years trends of microplastic pollution: Mass-quantitative analysis of archived mussel samples from the North and Baltic Seas

Maurits Halbach et al.

Summary: This study investigates the levels of microplastics (MP) in blue mussels from the North and Baltic Sea over a 30-year period. The research found that MP levels in North Sea samples gradually increased from the 1980s/90s to the 2000s, while MP levels in Baltic Sea samples remained consistently high and stable. The presence of different polymer clusters suggests regional and trans-regional sources of microplastic pollution.

Quantification and characterization of plastics in near-shore surface waters of Atlantic Canada

Ariel Smith et al.

Summary: Plastics are a common pollutant in the marine environment, and there is a lack of data on microplastics in the Atlantic Canada region. The study found that most of the plastics were microplastics, especially plastic fragments. Polyethylene and polypropylene were the main types of plastics. These findings have implications for future research and can inform environmental groups, government, and academia.

Marine mammals and microplastics: A systematic review and call for standardisation

Laura J. Zantis et al.

Summary: Microplastics receive increasing attention due to concerns about their impact on the environment and human health. Marine mammals, as indicators of marine ecosystem health, may be vulnerable to microplastic exposure. Studies have found microplastics in marine mammal tissues and feces, but methodological and reporting deficiencies make comparisons and extrapolations difficult.

Impact of the marine litter pollution on the Mediterranean biodiversity: A risk assessment study with focus on the marine protected areas

J. Soto-Navarro et al.

Summary: A novel methodology to assess the risk of marine litter pollution in the Mediterranean Sea was implemented in this study. Results indicated that hot-spots for the ML risk concentrate in coastal regions, mainly influenced by biodiversity. Furthermore, analysis on marine protected areas revealed that proximity to ML sources plays a key role in controlling the risk, and current protection levels are not effective in reducing the impact of ML pollution.

Origin and Persistence of Markings in a Long-Term Photo-Identification Dataset Reveal the Threat of Entanglement for Endangered Northern Bottlenose Whales (Hyperoodon ampullatus)

Laura Joan Feyrer et al.

Summary: This study found that fin notches and back indentations on northern bottlenose whales were stable markings over time, with males and mature males having higher incidence of most mark types. The proportion of reliably marked individuals increased over time. Anthropogenic markings, including entanglement and propeller-vessel strike scars, occurred at a steady rate and were observed on 6.6% of the population. The annual gain rate for injuries from human interactions was over 5 times the annual potential biological removal (PBR) calculated for the endangered population.

Floating marine litter and their risks to cetaceans off Portugal

Sara Sa et al.

Summary: Shipboard visual surveys off continental Portugal assessed Floating Dangerous Debris for Cetaceans (DDFC) and cetacean abundances, finding that plastic litter (other than fishing gear) accounted for 56.53% of total DDFC recorded. Areas of overlap between DDFC and cetaceans suggest varying levels of risk exposure for cetaceans within the study area. Future marine litter management efforts should focus on high-risk interaction areas predicted in the central region of the study, with DDFC categories serving as representative indicators of floating litter distribution for future assessments.
