Current pollution status, spatial features, and health risks of legacy and emerging halogenated flame retardants in agricultural soils across China

Qi An et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution status of halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) in agricultural soils across China, showing higher levels of HFRs in Eastern and Southern regions. Anthropogenic sources had a greater impact on the distribution of pollutants than environmental factors. Human health risk assessment via oral intake and dermal contact pathways indicated no carcinogenic risk for children and adults from the selected pollutants.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in sediment from a typical e-waste dismantling region in Southern China: Occurrence, spatial distribution, composition profiles, and ecological risks

Siyuan Ling et al.

Summary: Our study investigated the occurrence and distribution of PBDEs and NBFRs in sediment from the e-waste dismantling region of Guiyu, China. The levels of PBDEs and NBFRs in the sediment samples were found to vary significantly. The high presence of BFRs in Guiyu indicated the historical e-waste dismantling activities in the region, while locations far from Guiyu were likely to receive BFRs from atmospheric deposition.

Retrieval, Selection, and Evaluation of Chemical Property Data for Assessments of Chemical Emissions, Fate, Hazard, Exposure, and Risks

Li Li et al.

Summary: This comprehensive review offers practical guidance for using chemical property data in chemical assessments, including obtaining experimentally derived and in silico predicted property data sources, as well as strategies for evaluating and curating the data. It emphasizes the uncertainty and variability present in both experimentally derived and in silico predicted property data, advocating for the harmonization of multiple experimental data or consolidating predictions from multiple in silico tools.

Occurrence and spatial distribution of legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in seawater and sediment of the South China sea

Hongru Feng et al.

Summary: The occurrence and spatial distribution of PBDEs and NBFRs in the South China Sea in 2018 were investigated, with BDE-209 and decabromodiphenyl ethane identified as predominant BFRs. Rarely detected NBFRs, tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)isocyanurate and 2,4,6-tris(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine, were found for the first time in the study area, indicating their widespread application in the Pearl River Delta. Preliminary risk assessment suggests low to medium risks to marine organisms at some sites.

Characteristics of legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in water and sediment surrounding two e-waste dismantling regions in Taizhou, eastern China

Siyuan Ling et al.

Summary: The concentrations of PBDEs and NBFRs in water samples from two e-waste dismantling zones in Taizhou were comparable, while the levels were higher in sediment samples from the zone that was shut down in 2017. The study also found that certain brominated flame retardants did not decrease in concentration from the center to the outer regions of the sediment samples.

Probing Legacy and Alternative Flame Retardants in the Air of Chinese Cities

Shizhen Zhao et al.

Summary: In China, organophosphate FRs are the most common, with a concentration range of 1-612 ng/m(3), several orders of magnitude higher than PBDEs (1-1827 pg/m(3)) and NBFRs (1-1428 pg/m(3)). From 2013/2014 to 2018, levels of PBDEs, NBFRs, and DPs have significantly decreased, while that of OPFRs has increased by 1 order of magnitude. Gas-particle partitioning analysis showed that FRs could have not reached equilibrium, and the steady-state model is better suited for FRs with a higher log K-OA (>13).

Spatio-temporal variations and input patterns on the legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in coastal rivers of North China

Lin Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) is still the predominant compound, with significantly higher concentrations in the dry season compared to the wet season; while Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) shows no significant seasonal difference. The concentrations of BFRs were lower in urban rivers, but have increased in rural rivers since 2013.

Temporal trends of novel brominated flame retardants in mollusks from the Chinese Bohai Sea (2011-2018)

Yingjun Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of novel brominated flame retardants in mollusks collected from coastal cities in the Bohai Sea area were generally higher, with decabromodiphenylethane being the main contaminant. Temporal trends indicated a significant increase in the concentrations of these flame retardants, suggesting continuous release into the environment.
