Biochar mitigation of soil acidification and carbon sequestration is influenced by materials and temperature

Na Geng et al.

Summary: In this study, nine types of biochar produced from three raw materials at three pyrolysis temperatures were used to amend acidified brown soil. The application of biochar increased soil pH, reduced exchangeable acidity, exchangeable Al, and exchangeable H, alleviated oxidative stress in plants, and promoted rape growth. Biochar also enhanced microbial community diversity and reduced the mineralization rate of organic carbon. The effects of biochar depended on the pyrolysis temperature. This study clarified the best biochar materials and carbonization temperature for improving acidified soil and expanded the application range of biochar.

Aging features of metal(loid)s in biochar-amended soil: Effects of biochar type and aging method

Xiaodong Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aging effects of standard biochars on the remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soil. Sewage sludge biochars showed the highest resistance to aging, likely due to their oxygen-containing functional groups and poorly-developed pore structures. The relationship between ash content and pyrolysis temperature, as well as the similarities in aging patterns of Cu and Sb, were also observed. The results provide insights into the long-term risks associated with managing metal(loid)-contaminated agricultural soils.

Competitive adsorption, immobilization, and desorption risks of Cd, Ni, and Cu in saturated-unsaturated soils by biochar under combined aging

Zhuowen Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the competition, immobilization, and desorption of Cd, Ni, and Cu in saturated-unsaturated soils treated with original and KMnO4-modified biochars. The results showed that modified biochar had improved immobilization effects and maintained the most stable remediation effects. However, for Ni and Cu, the biochar application reduced the residual fraction and increased desorption by citric acid.

Lability, bioaccessibility, and ecological and health risks of anthropogenic toxic heavy metals in the arid calcareous soil around a nonferrous metal smelting area

Zhuling Chu et al.

Summary: This study examined the speciation and bioaccessibility of toxic heavy metals in arid calcareous soils contaminated by nonferrous metal smelting. The results showed that the contamination of these metals was mainly concentrated in the downwind areas of smelting or mining, and a significant portion of them were present in the labile fractions. The bioaccessibility of these metals in the calcareous soil was lower compared to acidic soils. These findings provide important insights into the ecological and health risks of anthropogenic toxic heavy metals in arid calcareous soils.

Interaction of biochar stability and abiotic aging: Influences of pyrolysis reaction medium and temperature

Hye-Bin Kim et al.

Summary: The study found that artificial aging decreased the stability of biochar, resulting in increased release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and mobility of arsenic. Wet-dry aging had the most significant impact on the release of DOM and arsenic. Using CO2 as a reaction medium can improve the stability of biochar.

Effect of aging on stabilization of Cd and Ni by biochars and enzyme activities in a historically contaminated alkaline agricultural soil simulated with wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycling

Kai Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that biochars can reduce the phytoavailability of cadmium and nickel in soil under different aging conditions, with a more significant reduction in nickel under wet-dry aging conditions. The addition of biochars decreased the distribution of cadmium in the acid soluble and reducible fractions in soil, and also had an impact on soil enzyme activities, particularly reducing catalase activity under wet-dry aging conditions.

Biochar aging alters the bioavailability of cadmium and microbial activity in acid contaminated soils

Tharanga Bandara et al.

Summary: The study showed that the effects of poultry-litter biochar (PBC) and sugar-gum-wood biochar (SBC) on Cd bioavailability and microbial activity varied over a 270-day period. PBC decreased Cd bioaccumulation in soils, while SBC initially increased it but then decreased by Day 270. Additionally, PBC increased microbial respiration, whereas SBC increased microbial biomass C in the soil.

Dry-wet and freeze-thaw aging activate endogenous copper and cadmium in biochar

Hongbiao Cui et al.

Summary: Aging increases the specific surface areas and oxygen-containing functional groups in biochar, but decreases pH, graphitization, and stability. Cu and Cd leachability is higher after freeze-thaw aging compared to dry-wet aging, with higher bioavailability in moderately- and highly-polluted biochars. The activation of endogenous Cu is related to organic functional groups, while Cd activation is mostly influenced by inorganic components and pH.

Biochars and Engineered Biochars for Water and Soil Remediation: A Review

Tariqul Islam et al.

Summary: Biochars are ecofriendly and multifunctional materials for remediation of water and soils, with engineered biochars showing better performance due to enlarged surface areas and surface functional groups. The main mechanisms for pollutant removal involve adsorption of inorganic pollutants and uptake of organic pollutants, driving forces including ion exchange, precipitation, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. Further pilot and field scale investigations are required to assess the practical applicability of biochars and engineered biochars in environmental remediation.
