Lignin-enzyme interaction: A roadblock for efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosics

Caoxing Huang et al.

Summary: Efficiently producing second-generation biofuels from biomass remains a long-term challenge due to biomass recalcitrance. Lignin significantly contributes to biomass recalcitrance by physically limiting enzyme access to carbohydrates. Research is focused on mitigating the negative effects of lignin on enzyme performance.

A critical review on the phytoremediation of heavy metals from environment: Performance and challenges

Xing Shen et al.

Summary: Phytoremediation is an effective and economical technique for reducing heavy metal contaminations. The efficiency of phytoremediation is influenced by the biomass of plants and the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil. However, low remediation efficiency and improper disposal of contaminated biomass have hindered its development and application. Various approaches have been used to enhance phytoremediation, but the disposal of contaminated biomass still faces challenges in terms of cost and security.

Nitric oxide amplifies cadmium binding in root cell wall of a high cadmium-accumulating rice (Oryza sativa L.) line by promoting hemicellulose synthesis and pectin demethylesterification

Huan Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals how NO regulates plant response to Cd stress in rice by modulating cell wall polysaccharides modification. Exogenous NO promotes pectin demethylesterification and increases hemicellulose accumulation, leading to more Cd binding in the root cell wall of rice.

Production of prebiotic xylooligosaccharides from industrial-derived xylan residue by organic acid treatment

Bowen Yan et al.

Summary: This study utilized maleic acid and citric acid as catalysts to produce xylooligosaccharides (XOS) with excellent prebiotic properties from industrial-derived xylan residue (IDXR). The results showed that citric acid exhibited a better ability to maximize XOS production under the identified optimum conditions. XOS produced using both maleic acid and citric acid treatments exhibited pronounced prebiotic activity for Bifidobacterium adolescentis and Lactobacillus acidophilus.

Solubilization of hemicellulose and fermentable sugars from bagasse, stalks, and leaves of sweet sorghum

Rodrigo Pagano Martins et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of different treatments on hemicellulose solubilization, xylose and glucose production from sweet sorghum bagasse, stalk, and leaves. Results showed that using 10% NaOH for pretreatment of bagasse and stalks resulted in the most effective hemicellulose solubilization, while biomasses pretreated with 10% H2O2 exhibited high enzymatic hydrolysis yield.

Jianwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Phytoremediation is a promising strategy for slightly Cd-contaminated soil, with better remediation efficiency and economic feasibility found in Sedum alfredii monoculture. Cost-benefit analysis showed that the benefits of monocropping and intercropping schemes would offset the total costs in 6 and 8 years, respectively, with monocropping achieving a higher net present value.
