Stereoselective degradation pathway of amide chiral herbicides and its impacts on plant and bacterial communities in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands

Yucong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study reveals the stereoselective degradation patterns and biodegradation mechanisms of metolachlor and napropamide in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands. The higher interphase transferability of napropamide leads to higher degradation rates, while the enantiomers of metolachlor and napropamide demonstrate highly selective biodegradation patterns. The antioxidant enzyme activities and fluorescence parameters of plants are positively correlated with the degradation efficiency and enantioselectivity of the pesticides. Adaptive regulations by plants promote the growth of microbial genera and the enrichment of specific herbicide-degrading bacteria, facilitating the degradation of the pesticides. The presence of Ferruginibacter contributes to the co-removal of napropamide and NO3--N.

Land use and roles of soil bacterial community in the dissipation of atrazine

Adijailton Jose de Souza et al.

Summary: This study found that microbial diversity in cultivated soils plays a significant role in the dissipation of ATZ, with the higher diversity attributed to adaptation of microbial groups to previous exposure to ATZ. In cases with higher diversity, ATZ dissipation was mainly attributed to mineralization.

Analysis of the mechanism for enhanced pyrene biodegradation based on the interactions between iron-ions and Rhodococcus ruber strain L9

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: Iron ions did not enhance bacterial growth but improved bacteria's pyrene removal capacity, contributing to the total efficiency of pyrene biodegradation. The process started with an initial formation of cation-a between Fe (III) and pyrene, which subsequently drove the pyrene removal process and accelerated the bacterial metabolic process. Moreover, a significant increase in the protein concentration, catechol dioxygenase (C12O and C23O) activities, and intracellular protein regulation in crude enzyme solution indicate a positive response of the bacteria during the iron ion-enhanced pyrene degradation process.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface waters from the seven main river basins of China: Spatial distribution, source apportionment, and potential risk assessment

Haiyan Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, long-term measurements of PAHs in surface waters of seven river basins across China were reported. The pollution level of PAHs was higher in North China than in South China, with coal and biomass combustion identified as the main contributors. Some individual PAH concentrations exceeded environmental quality standards, and certain river basins were found to be at moderate or high risk of contamination.

Hydrogenophaga aromaticivorans sp. nov., isolated from a para-xylene- degrading enrichment culture, capable of degrading benzene, meta- and para-xylene

Sinchan Banerjee et al.

Summary: The bacterium D2P1(T) is capable of degrading benzene, para-xylene, and meta-xylene, belonging to the genus Hydrogenophaga with distinct genetic lineage. Analysis based on 16S rRNA genes showed its low genomic relatedness to closest relatives, suggesting it represents a novel species within the genus.

Spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the water-sediment system near chemical industry parks in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Tianqi Jia et al.

Summary: The distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water and sediment samples around the industrial parks in the Yangtze River Delta are strongly influenced by industrial emissions, with high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs dominating in sediment and low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs dominating in water. The ecological risk assessment indicated that most sites were at low to medium risk, but one site posed a high risk.

Effect of iron plaque on antibiotic uptake and metabolism in water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic Forsk.) grown in hydroponic culture

Jun Tang et al.

Summary: Iron plaque (IP) in water spinach was found to have an impact on the uptake and translocation of tetracyclines (TCs), with the amount of IP positively correlating with the bioconcentration factor of TCs in roots and the accumulation of TC metabolites. The concentration of TCs in aerial tissues was significantly lower than in roots, showing a negative correlation with the translocation factor of TCs. The study suggests that metabolism of TCs in aquatic plants should not be overlooked when assessing the risk of antibiotic pollution.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distribution and interaction of bacterial microbiota in aging soils of a steel plant contaminated with PTEs and PAHs. Results showed significant changes in bacterial community abundance and composition with soil depth and pollution degree. Co-occurrence network analysis identified key bacterial taxa in different areas, while predictions indicated the influence of PTEs on PAHs degradation genes for bacterial metabolism function.
