Geographic Scale Influences the Interactivities Between Determinism and Stochasticity in the Assembly of Sedimentary Microbial Communities on the South China Sea Shelf

Hualin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction of two ecological processes on the continental shelf of the South China Sea and finds that geographic scale influences the interaction of determinism and stochasticity. The study also reveals that the balance of these two ecological processes is determined by the dispersal ability of microbes and environmental heterogeneity between areas.

Environmental Filtering by pH and Salinity Jointly Drives Prokaryotic Community Assembly in Coastal Wetland Sediments

Huang Yu et al.

Summary: This study examined the diversity, assembly processes, and environmental drivers of bacterial and archaeal communities in coastal wetland sediments. Sediment pH and salinity were found to significantly affect the diversity and keystone taxa of these microbial communities. The co-occurrence networks of bacteria and archaea were closely linked with pH and salinity, indicating their importance in driving the prokaryotic community. The results also showed that heterogeneous and homogeneous selection drove community assembly, with deterministic processes playing a more important role in offshore sites.

Bacterial motility: machinery and mechanisms

Navish Wadhwa et al.

Summary: Bacteria have developed different mechanisms for motility to utilize resources and environments. They can swim in aqueous media through rotation of helical filaments, or move over solid surfaces using various mechanisms such as twitching, gliding, and sliding. Recent technological advances have improved our understanding of the molecular machinery behind bacterial motility.

Ecological and Evolutionary Implications of Microbial Dispersal

Gordon F. Custer et al.

Summary: This article discusses the impact of dispersal on the structure and function of microbiomes, as well its importance in ecology and evolution. The authors point out that our understanding of dispersal in microbiomes is relatively limited, but insights can be gained by comparing it to macro-organismal ecology. The article also explores the effects of dispersal on gene influx and allele frequencies, and highlights how successful and unsuccessful dispersal events contribute to the dynamic assembly of microbial communities.

Sediment Accumulation and Carbon Burial in Four Hadal Trench Systems

Kazumasa Oguri et al.

Summary: This study assesses the focusing, deposition, and accumulation of material and organic carbon in four different hadal trench systems. The results show that the deposition and accumulation of organic carbon in hadal trenches are influenced by mass-wasting events and local bathymetry. Hadal trenches play an important role in the deposition and sequestration of organic carbon in the deep sea.

Bacterial and eukaryotic intact polar lipids point to in situ production as a key source of labile organic matter in hadal surface sediment of the Atacama Trench

Edgart Flores et al.

Summary: Elevated organic matter concentrations are found in hadal surface sediments, but the origin of this material remains unclear. By analyzing the composition and distribution of cellular membrane intact polar lipids (IPLs) extracted from the sediments of the Atacama Trench, it was found that IPLs in hadal sediments mainly derive from in situ microbial production and biomass. They also discovered lipid characteristics that resemble physiological adaptation to high pressure and low temperature.

Distribution, Source, and Burial of Sedimentary Organic Carbon in Kermadec and Atacama Trenches

Yunping Xu et al.

Summary: The study conducted a comprehensive analysis of sedimentary organic carbon in the Kermadec Trench and Atacama Trench, finding that TOC content in the Atacama Trench region is significantly higher than in the Kermadec Trench region, suggesting the selective preservation of terrigenous biogenic/fossil OC at hadal trench axes.

Microbial community structure in hadal sediments: high similarity along trench axes and strong changes along redox gradients

Clemens Schauberger et al.

Summary: The study found that microbial communities in Hadal trenches exhibit high similarity within each trench axis and are strongly influenced by sediment depth and redox stratification. Differences in community composition are more related to sediment depth within each trench rather than between different trenches, and not solely explained by total organic carbon content.

Hadal trenches are dynamic hotspots for early diagenesis in the deep sea

Ronnie N. Glud et al.

Summary: In-situ measurements reveal that hadal trenches are biogeochemically dynamic and diverse environments in the deep sea, with benthic oxygen uptake rate varying significantly between locations and linked to surface primary productivity, indicating a more complex and diverse nature than previously recognized.
