Coastal ecosystem engineers and their impact on sediment dynamics: Eelgrass-bivalve interactions under wave exposure

Lukas Meysick et al.

Summary: Habitat forming ecosystem engineers, such as seagrasses and bivalves, play essential roles in structuring coastal seascapes. This study compared the effects of seagrass (Zostera marina) and associated bivalves (Limecola balthica, Cerastoderma edule, Magellana gigas) on sediment dynamics in wave flumes. Results showed that seagrass reduced bedload erosion rates and modified the impacts of bivalves, indicating the importance of interspecific interactions for habitat emergence and resilience in the face of extreme wave conditions.

Molecular data reallocates Sorosphaerula radicalis (Plasmodiophorida, Phytomyxea, Rhizaria) to the genus Hillenburgia

Michaela Hittorf et al.

Summary: This study reports the first record of Sorosphaerula radicalis (Phytomyxea, Rhizaria) in continental Europe and provides molecular data for this species. By comparing morphological data and life cycles, the study concludes that Sorosphaerula radicalis belongs to the genus Hillenburgia.

Range expansion of Marinomyxa marina, a phytomyxid parasite of the invasive seagrass Halophila stipulacea, to the Caribbean

Viktorie Kolatkova et al.

Summary: Halophila stipulacea, a small seagrass species native to the Indo-Pacific, has become a successful invader in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. It has been found to host a phytomyxid parasite called Marinomyxa marina, which is genetically uniform across different invaded regions. The symbiotic relationship between the parasite and the seagrass is observed to be non-lethal, but the need for further monitoring is emphasized.

Viktorie Kolatkova et al.

Summary: Phytomyxea marine representatives are a widely understudied ecological group infecting various algal, diatom, and seagrass species, with little known about their diversity, ecology, and pathogenic potential. This study focused on resolving the phylogenetic relations of Phytomyxea parasites infecting the seagrass genus Halophila, with the discovery of a new species Plasmodiophora halophilae and the proposal of a new class Marinomyxa. The research suggests a specific parasite-host relationship between M. marina and H. stipulacea, potentially indicating a shared migration through the Suez Canal.

Global Diversity and Biogeography of the Zostera marina Mycobiome

Cassandra L. Ettinger et al.

Summary: This study characterized the distribution of fungi associated with the seagrass Zostera marina globally, finding significant differences in fungal community between sites and a weak but significant distance decay pattern in the Pacific Ocean. Most taxa assembled through stochastic processes, with the core mycobiomes dominated by unclassified Sordariomycetes spp. and other fungal groups. Ongoing research is needed to further understand the roles of marine fungi, especially those associated with seagrasses.

Diversity, distribution and conservation of seagrass in coastal waters of the Liaodong Peninsula, North Yellow Sea, northern China: Implications for seagrass conservation

Shaochun Xu et al.

Summary: Seagrass beds are highly productive ecosystems along temperate and tropical coastlines globally. This study in northern China identified four seagrass species in the Liaodong Peninsula, with seagrass bed area decreasing significantly with increasing water depth. Human activities pose a threat to these seagrass beds, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts.

Summary: Ecosystem engineers such as seagrasses enhance biodiversity in marine soft-bottom habitats, especially in polluted coastlines. Even small eelgrass beds can act as hotspots and contribute significantly to local benthic diversity.
