Chromium in Chinese coals: geochemistry and environmental impacts associated with coal-fired power plants

Quan Tang et al.

Summary: The abundance and modes of occurrence of Cr in Chinese coals were investigated in this study, along with the environmental impacts associated with coal-fired power plants (CFPPs). The concentration of Cr in Chinese coals varied spatially and temporally, and its enrichment in solid wastes after coal combustion poses a concern for CFPPs. The atmospheric emission of Cr from CFPPs has been increasing annually.

Desulfurization of Giral lignite of Rajasthan (Western India) using Burkholderia sp. GR 8-02

Aniruddha Kumar et al.

Summary: The desulfurization of high sulfur Giral lignite in Rajasthan, India was effectively carried out with the assistance of Burkholderia sp. GR 8-02, resulting in significant reductions in total sulfur, pyritic sulfur, and sulfate sulfur content. The treatment also led to decreases in the ash yield and volatile matter, while increasing the fixed carbon and elemental carbon content, as well as the gross calorific value.

Geochemical characteristics, origin and forms of sulphur distribution in the Talcher coalfield, India

P. Gopinathan et al.

Summary: Geochemical studies on the Talcher coal field reveal the occurrence, origin and forms of sulphur in the area. The coal contains organic sulphur, pyritic sulphur, and sulphate sulphur. The coal's sulphur concentration is low, with organic sulphur and pyritic sulphur being the main forms. The composition and calorific value of the coal are influenced by the ash percentage. The coal also contains other elements such as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. Additionally, the presence of sulphide minerals, mainly pyrite and marcasite, was observed.

Geochemical, mineralogical and toxicological characteristics of coal fly ash and its environmental impacts

P. Gopinathan et al.

Summary: Coal and coal-based products have negative impacts on human health and the global climate, so their use should be approached with caution. This comprehensive study investigates the elemental configuration and impact on the ecosystem of coal-derived samples, specifically fly-ash. Various elements and minerals were found in the samples, including heavy metals such as chromium and lead. The study also revealed the presence of irregularly shaped minerals and unburnt carbon in the fly-ash, which can reduce the burning efficiency of coal.

P. Gopinathan et al.

Summary: This study used remote sensing and digital image processing to locate and delineate iron ore soil areas in a region of southern India. The results showed that image processing can effectively identify ferric, ferrous, and lateritic mineral assemblages, contributing to the exploration of iron ore with high reliability.

Morphotectonic analysis of petroliferous Barmer rift basin (Rajasthan, India)

Mery Biswas et al.

Summary: Geomorphologic studies of the Barmer basin in the western Rajasthan area provide valuable insights into the petroleum geosciences of sedimentary basins. The Quaternary geomorphology of the basin, including aeolian landforms, drainage patterns, and abandoned gullies, was analyzed using Digital Elevation Model and field verifications. The study identified the tectonically active regions within the basin, with watersheds-1 and 2 showing the highest activity. The presence of blind fractures was indicated by the vegetation index analysis.

Mineralogical characteristics of low-rank coal from Nagaur, Rajasthan, India and their implication for the environment of paleomire

Alok K. Singh et al.

Summary: The lignite samples from Matasukh mines in Nagaur, Rajasthan, were analyzed using optical microscopy and mineralogy to determine their characteristics and paleodepositional condition. The study revealed the dominance of carbonate minerals, followed by sulfides and clay minerals, with the presence of framboidal pyrites indicating marine incursion. Clay mineral occurrence in cell cavities, fissures, and cracks suggested an authigenic and syn-depositional origin for the Nagaur lignite, which was deposited under terrestrial oxic to marine terrestrial oxic to sub-oxic conditions in semi-arid to slightly arid paleoclimatic conditions.

Study of Hydrocarbon Source Potential of Kapurdi Lignites of Barmer Basin, Rajasthan, Western India

P. K. Rajak et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the early Paleogene lignites of Barmer Basin in Kapurdi are rich in kerogen type-III organic matter, with high concentration of reactive macerals and low maturity, exhibiting a fairly high conversion factor and oil yield. Additionally, NMR analysis suggests a high potential for hydrocarbon in Kapurdi lignites.
