Dietary and drinking water intake of essential trace elements in a typical Kashin-Beck disease endemic area of Tibet, China

Xinjie Zha et al.

Summary: This study assessed the concentrations of essential trace elements (ETEs) in drinking water and highland barleys, and their effects on the health of rural residents in Luolong County, Tibet. Results showed that the intake of Fe, Mn, and Zn exceeded the maximum oral reference dose, while the intake of Mo, Cu, and Se was insufficient. Therefore, in order to prevent and control the prevalence of Kashin-Beck disease and ensure the health of the local residents, it is important to regulate the intake of Fe, Mn, and Zn, as well as increase the intake of Mo, Cu, and Se.

Spatial distribution and determinants of health loss from Kashin-Beck disease in Bin County, Shaanxi Province, China

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that grade II patients and those over 50 years old contributed most to the health loss from KBD in Bin County, with significant spatial clustering of health loss observed. This clustering was significantly related to organically bound Se in soil and poverty rate of KBD patients, suggesting that future interventions should focus on areas with high Se content and poor economic conditions.

Dietary Micronutrients from Zygote to Senility: Updated Review of Minerals' Role and Orchestration in Human Nutrition throughout Life Cycle with Sex Differences

Mohamed A. Farag et al.

Summary: Micronutrients such as selenium, fluoride, zinc, iron, and manganese play crucial roles in human homeostasis, with their importance spanning from pregnancy to old age. It is important to consider the intake and management of these micronutrients throughout the different stages of life to prevent or treat symptoms of deficiency or excess.

The nutritional quality of cereals varies geospatially in Ethiopia and Malawi

D. Gashu et al.

Summary: Micronutrient deficiencies are widespread among people in sub-Saharan Africa due to limited access to micronutrient-rich food sources. Research in Ethiopia and Malawi shows geographical variation in the micronutrient composition of staple cereal grains, influenced by soil and environmental factors. Understanding these geographical effects is crucial for designing interventions to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies.

Short-term effects of cadmium on leaf growth and nutrient transport in rice plants

Michiel Huybrechts et al.

Summary: Prolonged exposure to cadmium in rice plants can lead to adverse effects on growth due to disturbance in growth balance caused by cadmium accumulation in roots and leaves. Increased expression of genes related to glutathione metabolism is crucial in combating early cadmium toxicity, rather than genes encoding for antioxidant enzymes.
