Provenance changes for mineral matter in the latest Permian coals from western Guizhou, southwestern China, relative to tectonic and volcanic activity in the Emeishan Large Igneous Province and Paleo-Tethys region

Minglian Shen et al.

Summary: Recent studies on the coal seams in SW China have shown changes in the provenance of water-transported sediments during the Late Permian and Early Triassic. This paper investigates the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the Permian coal-bearing strata in the Huopu coal deposit, revealing that the sediments were mainly sourced from the Emeishan Large Igneous Province and Paleo-Tethys convergent margins. The sedimentation in the Huopu coal deposit was controlled by tectonic activity along the Xiaojiang Fault, resulting in the deposition of clastic sediments and peat accumulation.

Natural sub-bituminous coal as filler enhances mechanical, insulation and flame retardant properties of coir-polypropylene bio-composites

M. S. Santosh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the addition of 20-30% natural sub-bituminous coal filler to coir-reinforced polypropylene composites increases their tensile strength by 66% and flexural strength by 55%. These composites are intended for insulation applications and as a replacement for gypsum-based false ceiling tiles.

Witnessing floral evolution: a case study from Barakar formation in Lajkura colliery, Ib-river coalfield, Mahanadi Basin, India

Shreerup Goswami et al.

Summary: Signatures of evolutionary trends in glossopterid elements were observed in the Barakar Formation at Lajkura Colliery in the Ib River Coalfield. Significant morphographic variations in plant species from older to younger horizons indicate two distinct assemblage zones, suggesting evolution in glossopterids and the influence of specific climatic conditions on the development of species.

Ichnofabric analysis of shallow to deep marine Carboniferous sediments, from the southern Paleotethys margin, Alborz Basin (northern Iran): approaching autogenic and allogenic environmental controls

Mahmoud Sharafi et al.

Summary: This study integrates ichnological and sedimentological data to interpret depositional environments in the carbonate sediments of the Mobarak Formation in northern Iran. Seven ichnofabrics have been identified, each revealing different energy phases and substrate conditions, controlled by subsidence-inducing changes in the accommodation space. The study highlights the sensitivity of ichnological features to paleoenvironmental conditions such as oxygen levels and hydrodynamic energy.

Summary: The study integrates ichnological and sedimentological data to interpret depositional environments of the Tirgan Formation, identifying different facies and ichnoassemblages in the sediments. The development of trace fossils is controlled by depositional and ecological conditions, reflecting a shallowing upward trend in the storm-tide-dominated ramp sequence.

Geochemical characteristics, origin and forms of sulphur distribution in the Talcher coalfield, India

P. Gopinathan et al.

Summary: Geochemical studies on the Talcher coal field reveal the occurrence, origin and forms of sulphur in the area. The coal contains organic sulphur, pyritic sulphur, and sulphate sulphur. The coal's sulphur concentration is low, with organic sulphur and pyritic sulphur being the main forms. The composition and calorific value of the coal are influenced by the ash percentage. The coal also contains other elements such as carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. Additionally, the presence of sulphide minerals, mainly pyrite and marcasite, was observed.

Evaluation of chemical weathering proxies by comparing drilled cores versus outcrops and weathering history during the Permian-Triassic transition

Jianbo Chen et al.

Summary: Our study on outcrop and drilled core samples from the Late Permian to Early Triassic in southern China reveals that chemical weathering during the Late Permian was influenced by various factors such as global warming, acid rainfall, and volcanism. These findings provide valuable insights into the severe bio-crisis and global environmental changes that occurred during this time period.

Geochemical, mineralogical and toxicological characteristics of coal fly ash and its environmental impacts

P. Gopinathan et al.

Summary: Coal and coal-based products have negative impacts on human health and the global climate, so their use should be approached with caution. This comprehensive study investigates the elemental configuration and impact on the ecosystem of coal-derived samples, specifically fly-ash. Various elements and minerals were found in the samples, including heavy metals such as chromium and lead. The study also revealed the presence of irregularly shaped minerals and unburnt carbon in the fly-ash, which can reduce the burning efficiency of coal.

Palaeoecology and depositional setting of an Early Permian (Artinskian) mire based on a multi-proxy study at the Jagannath coal mine (Talcher Coalfield), Mahanadi Basin, India

Deveshwar Prakash Mishra et al.

Summary: This study on the coal-bearing Jagannath section in the Talcher Coalfield, India, used petrography, palynofacies, charcoal, and plant fossils to determine an Early Permian age and the depositional environment. The research discovered repeated wildfires in the catchment area and suggested a high-fire phase in Earth's history linked to elevated oxygen levels. The findings contribute to understanding Permian peat-forming ecosystems and environments through inter and intra-basinal correlations across the Gondwana.

The influence of heating on the carbon isotope composition, organic geochemistry and petrology of coal from the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Poland): An experimental and field study

Justyna Ciesielczuk et al.

Summary: This study elaborates on the influence of natural intra-deposit heating on the delta C-13 signature, organic geochemistry, and petrology of coal and coal-bearing rocks in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland. Heating experiments conducted in open and semi-closed systems demonstrated the importance of temperature and oxygen access in palaeofire reconstruction. The impact of palaeofires on coal properties was observed in terms of devolatilisation pores, reflectance, and extractable compounds. The isotopic and geochemical features of coal seams suspected of intra-deposit heating were more similar to semi-closed-system heating, with delta C-13 signatures and organic geochemistry showing minimal response to laboratory re-heating.

Palaeobotanical and biomarker evidence for Early Permian (Artinskian) wildfire in the Rajmahal Basin, India

Srikanta Murthy et al.

Summary: This study provides comprehensive evidence for repeated wildfire events during the deposition of Artinskian sediments in the Rajmahal Basin, India, through an analysis of palynology, fossil charcoal, and biomarkers. The dominance of Glossopteridales and the presence of n-alkanes, isoprenoids, terpenoids, and aromatic compounds in the sediments suggest the input of an early conifer vegetation and bacterial activity. The anatomical features of fossil charcoal fragments point to a gymnospermous wood affinity and suggest a parautochthonous origin for the charcoal sediments.
