Phytotoxicity mechanism of the natural radionuclide thorium in Vicia faba

Qian Fu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that high levels of Th accumulation in plant cell walls had adverse effects on crop growth and photosynthesis, as well as inhibiting root respiration and cell mitosis. Additionally, the study identified the involvement of SOD, POD, and CAT activities in regulating reactive oxygen species accumulation in cell walls.

Estimation of population exposure to terrestrial gamma rays in Canada

Jing Chen et al.

Summary: Based on ground gamma ray spectrometry surveys conducted in populated areas across Canada, the population-weighted annual effective dose from exposure to terrestrial gamma rays was estimated to be 167 +/- 43 μSv. Indoor exposures at home contribute the most to the total annual effective dose.

Determination of natural radionuclides and some metal concentrations in human tooth samples in the Rize province, Turkey

Hasan Baltas et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify concentrations of radionuclides and metals in tooth samples from residents of Rize province, Turkey. Results showed varying activity concentrations of Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40, with higher values than the global average for bones. Metal concentrations did not show a consistent pattern with age or sex, but the results were generally consistent with similar studies.

Radiological risk from activity concentrations of natural radionuclides: Cumulative Hazard Index

Serpil Akozcan et al.

Summary: The Cumulative Hazard Index method was proposed for the first time to assess the risk levels of radionuclides, and significant radiological parameters and risk analyses for Ra-226, Th-232 and K-40 pollution levels in soil were determined using probability distribution functions. The activity concentration of Ra-226, Th-232 and K-40 in samples was found to vary within certain ranges.

Natural and artificial radionuclide activity concentrations and dose assessments of some medicinal plants in Balikesir, Turkey

Mirac Kamislioglu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the natural and artificial radionuclide concentrations and radiological dose values of nine different medicinal plants used in Balikesir province from Turkey. The results showed variations in radionuclide concentrations and radiological dose values among the medicinal plants, with Lavandula x intermedia having the highest Cs-137 concentration and Thymus vulgaris L. having the lowest Cs-137 activity concentration.

Effects of fertilisation on radionuclide uptake by maize from an acidic soil in northwestern Croatia

Zeljka Zgorelec et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of fertilisation on radionuclide transfer from soil to maize crops. The results showed that fertilisation did not affect the radiological properties of the soil, had a suppressive effect on the transfer of radionuclides of the 232Th decay chain, and had little impact on 210Pb concentration in stems.
