Life cycle assessment of amine-based versus ammonia-based post combustion CO2 capture in coal-fired power plants

Naser S. Matin et al.

Summary: A comparative life cycle assessment was conducted on subcritical and supercritical coal fired power plants with and without CO2 capture unit. The results showed that adding a CO2 capture unit had significant benefits for global warming but had negative impact on other environmental categories. MEA-based capture unit performed better than ammonia-based.

Life cycle assessment of combustion-based electricity generation technologies integrated with carbon capture and storage: A review

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a key technology for reducing CO2 emissions from conventional power systems. This review examines the past 10 years of life cycle assessment (LCA) research on combustion-based electricity generation systems integrated with CCS. The studies show that CCS can reduce direct CO2 emissions from power plants by nearly 90%, but it also increases other environmental impacts and results in an energy penalty of 15-44%. Factors such as time span and leakage need to be considered in LCA, and the focus should shift towards large-scale deployment and interdisciplinary assessments.
