Photo-transformation of microplastics and its toxicity to Caco-2 cells

Xiaoqin Yu et al.

Summary: This study found that polystyrene microplastics undergo photo-transformation under ultraviolet light, leading to the formation of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups. With increasing PS-MPs concentration and prolonged light exposure, the toxicity to Caco-2 cells gradually intensifies, partly due to the greater toxicity of oxygen-containing functional groups compared to carbon-containing functional groups.

What are the drivers of tetracycline photolysis induced by polystyrene microplastic?

Rui Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigates the photolysis of tetracycline (TC) induced by polystyrene microplastics (PS MPs) under sunlight irradiation. The results demonstrate that PS can induce the photolysis of TC, enhancing its degradation through the generation of hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, and superoxide anion. The study also reveals that highly aged PS accelerates the photolysis of TC due to the generation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), and a degradation pathway for TC induced by PS is proposed.

The characteristics of dissolved organic matter release from UV-aged microplastics and its cytotoxicity on human colonic adenocarcinoma cells

Yibo Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the change of Polyurethane microplastic (PU-MPs) and the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (PU-DOM) under different aging conditions. The results showed that the release amount of PU-DOM was higher under air aging compared to water aging. The composition of PU-DOM in different systems was the same, but the release amount was different. The cytotoxicity of PU-DOM was consistent with the changing trend of ROS level in PU-MPs, indicating the role of ROS in inducing in vitro toxicity. These results highlight the adverse health effects of photoaged PU-MPs and provide new perspectives for the environmental risks of microplastics.

Effects and mechanisms of aged polystyrene microplastics on the photodegradation of sulfamethoxazole in water under simulated sunlight

Xushen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different aging degrees of polystyrene microplastics (PS MPs) on the photolysis of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in sunlit water. The results showed that the presence of PS MPs inhibited the photo-degradation of SMX, and the inhibition effect was negatively correlated with the aging degree of the MPs. The mechanism for the inhibition was found to be the reduction of the triplet excited state of SMX. Additionally, the aged PS MPs also decreased the types and yields of degradation products of SMX.

Distribution, influence factors, and biotoxicity of environmentally persistent free radical in soil at a typical coking plant

Qianqian Li et al.

Summary: Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are emerging pollutants in contaminated soils, with Chinese coke production identified as a significant source. A study on a typical coking plant in Tangshan, China revealed higher concentrations of EPFRs in the reconstructed project (RP) region compared to the elimination engineering (EE) region, with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) identified as the main source in EE region. Copper (Cu) and iron oxide (Fe2O3) were found to be positive influence factors in EPFRs formation, while total organic carbon (TOC) had a negative impact. Visible light irradiation was shown to induce the transformation and generation of EPFRs.

Direct toxicity of environmentally persistent free radicals to nematode Caenorhabditis elegans after excluding the concomitant chemicals

Huijie Li et al.

Summary: Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) have attracted extensive attention due to their potential toxicity. In this study, the direct toxicity of EPFRs was confirmed by comparing systems without EPFRs, and it was found that EPFRs-containing particles exhibited significant toxicity to Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), while the parent chemical and intermediate degradation products did not. EPFRs mediated the generation of reactive oxygen species and increased gene expressions related to oxidative stress, biotransformation, energy homeostasis, survival, proliferation, cell and embryonic development in C. elegans.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of tire wear particles (TWPs) on sulfide production in anaerobic biofilms in sewers and their mechanisms. The results showed that photoaging TWPs had a significant inhibitory effect on sulfide production due to the higher concentration of reactive persistent radicals on their surfaces. Photoaging TWPs were also more uniformly distributed in the wastewater system and could penetrate the biofilm to damage bacterial cells, enhancing their toxic effects.

Yuan Wang et al.

Summary: The adsorption behaviors of Cu(II) and tetracycline (TC) on polyethylene microplastics exposed to different environments varied, with marine- and soil-exposed microplastics showing higher adsorption and stabilization capacities. The adsorption isotherms were better described by Langmuir model for water- and soil-exposed microplastics, while kinetic experiments revealed differing intra-particle diffusion effects. Additionally, the glycosyl composition and density functional theory analysis suggested that biofilm components and metal-antibiotic complexes played a role in the adsorption process.

What Is on the Outside Matters-Surface Charge and Dissolve Organic Matter Association Affect the Toxicity and Physiological Mode of Action of Polystyrene Nanoplastics to C. elegans

Carolin L. Schultz et al.

Summary: Surface functionalization and eco-corona formation can modulate the toxicity of nanoplastics, altering the potency and order of toxicity. The effects of surface charges on nanoplastic toxicity are primarily linked to differences in effect thresholds and dose-associated damage parameters, rather than toxicokinetic parameters. Eco-corona interactions between particles can reduce toxicity, but the order of potency of charged forms remains consistent.
