Effect of thiamethoxam on the behavioral profile alteration and toxicity of adult zebrafish at environmentally relevant concentrations

Jiangtao Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of the insecticide thiamethoxam (THM) on the behavior of adult zebrafish. The results showed that after exposure to different concentrations of THM, the locomotor activity, aggregation, and social activity of the fish were enhanced, but memory of the food zone was disrupted and abnormal swimming behavior was observed. THM exposure also caused pathological changes in the brain tissue, affected the concentrations of acetylcholinesterase and cortisol, and impacted the condition factor and organ coefficients of the zebrafish. This highlights the importance of behavioral studies in ecological risk assessment.

Discovery of 2-Phenylquinolines with Broad-Spectrum Anti- coronavirus Activity

Maria Giulia Nizi et al.

Summary: In this study, a compound with potential antiviral activity was identified from a selection of compounds. This compound showed promising activity in the severe phenotypic-based screening assay. Further experiments demonstrated that this compound and its analogues had low toxicity and inhibited the replication of SARS-CoV-2. They also exhibited antiviral activity against other human coronaviruses. Additionally, the compound showed potent inhibition against the SARS-CoV-2 helicase, highlighting its potential against emerging coronavirus outbreaks.

Occurrence and Ecological Impact of Chemical Mixtures in a Semiclosed Sea by Suspect Screening Analysis

Xiaoxia Feng et al.

Summary: Stress from mixtures of synthetic chemicals is a significant issue for marine ecosystems. However, a robust screening workflow integrating toxicological-based ranking schemes is still lacking. In this study, suspect screening analysis was used to monitor the presence and compositions of priority pollutants in seawater and estuarine water samples from the Bohai Sea. Various organic pollutants were identified, and their distribution patterns were influenced by run-off inputs, ocean currents, and chemical use history. Ecological risks were assessed using toxicity-weighted concentration ranking scheme, and pentachlorophenol was found to be the main contributor. By optimizing multiple variables, extended ranking of identified pollutants was possible under the toxicological priority index framework. Similarity of toxicological endpoints of the prioritized pollutants was screened using ToxAlerts, and aromatic amine was highlighted as the most frequently detected structural alert for genotoxic carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. These findings demonstrate the rationality of ranking schemes integrated into suspect screening analysis for profiling contamination characteristics, assessing ecological risk potentials, and prioritizing structural alerts.

Human activities induce potential aquatic threats of micropollutants in Danjiangkou Reservoir, the largest artificial freshwater lake in Asia

Miao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of multiple micropollutants and other stressors on the ecosystem of the Danjiangkou Reservoir in central China. The results showed a widespread contamination of micropollutants in the reservoir, with the tributaries being the most severely affected. Pesticides and organophosphate esters were identified as the major contributors to ecological risk. Environmental variables and human activities were found to be potential threats to the aquatic ecosystem.

Miaowei Ci et al.

Summary: The study investigated antibiotic pollution in the Xiaoqing River basin, finding high risks posed by antibiotics such as ofloxacin and spatial-temporal distribution differences. The contribution rate of sewage treatment plants was high, with approximately 972.31 kg of antibiotics discharged into Bohai Bay in 2017, potentially threatening the marine ecosystem.

Pollution status, influencing factors and environmental risks of neonicotinoids, fipronil and its metabolites in a typical semi-closed bay in China

Xiuping He et al.

Summary: The study comprehensively investigated the occurrence, spatiotemporal variations, influence factors, and environmental risks of neonicotinoids and fipronil in Jiaozhou Bay, China. Both NEOs and FIPs were found to be predominant pesticides in the area, with higher concentrations observed in summer and autumn. Temperature and nitrogen-containing nutrients were identified as key factors affecting the distribution of these pesticides in the environment. Some rivers and sewage treatment plants were found to pose a certain risk of chronic toxicity for NEOs in summer. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring and addressing pesticide contamination in aquatic environments.

Summary: A comprehensive target analysis method was used to identify potential contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in sediment samples collected from Beppu Bay, Japan. The study detected 80 compounds, including three PAHs and TIPPP isomers, with concentrations increasing with decreasing sediment depth. These findings suggest that these chemicals may be categorized as potential CECs in marine environments.

Summary: The study found that the Water-Sediment Regulation Scheme promoted phytoplankton growth in estuarine areas, but decreased phytoplankton abundance in the entire study area. It also led to a decrease in phytoplankton biodiversity and an increase in abundance of specific species like Synedra sp. Moreover, the scheme resulted in a temporary rapid increase in zooplankton abundance and biomass.

Seasonal distribution and ecological risk of phthalate esters in surface water and marine organisms of the Bohai Sea

Cuizhu Sun et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatiotemporal variability and ecological risks of 16 phthalate esters (PAEs) in the Bohai Sea. Dimethyl phthalate (DMP), di-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP), and diethylhexylphthalate (DEHP) were found to be predominant in both water and biota. Indicator organisms like Chaeturichthys hexanema, Cynoglossus lighti, and Loligo japonica were identified for assessing PAE pollution in the area. Risk quotient analysis revealed that DIBP, DBP, and DEHP posed relatively greater risks to the aquatic system in the Bohai Sea.
