Plate heat exchangers fouling mitigation effects in heating of water solutions: A review

Petro Kapustenko et al.

Summary: A comprehensive analysis of fouling in plate heat exchangers (PHEs) on heating water solutions is presented. The main fouling mechanisms in these conditions are crystallisation and particulate fouling. Modelling of local process parameters in channels with accounting for the geometry of corrugations on plates is extremely important for the accurate prediction of fouling formation. Among different ways of fouling mitigation, the accurate design and proper selection of plates and their arrangement is considered the most effective.

Infrared thermography observations of crystallization fouling in a plate heat exchanger

Jure Berce et al.

Summary: This study investigated calcium carbonate crystallization fouling in a corrugated plate heat exchanger, and demonstrated the use of temperature and flow measurements, coupled with infrared thermography, to monitor fouling. The results showed that fouling caused channel blockage and flow obstructions, resulting in significant flow redistribution within the channel. This approach provides valuable insights for heat exchanger fouling studies and lays the foundation for future research on dynamic operation and computational models.

Molecular size and shape effects: Tracer diffusion and the Stokes-Einstein relation

Yoshiki Ishii et al.

Summary: The effects of molecular size and shape on the Stokes-Einstein relation were evaluated by comparing the solute and solvent in dilute solutions. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed for an n-alkane in Ar and Ar in an n-alkane. The results showed that the differences in size and interaction energy are significant, while the differences in shape can be neglected in these systems.

Experimental study on fouling inhibition characteristics of a variable frequency electromagnetic field on the CaCO3 fouling of a heat transfer surface

Yandong Liang et al.

Summary: Forced convective heat transfer and CaCO3 deposition experiments were conducted to investigate the fouling inhibition characteristics of a variable frequency electromagnetic field. The results showed that the electromagnetic field effectively inhibited the CaCO3 fouling deposition and decreased the growth rate of fouling. It also reduced the conductivity of the test fluid and promoted the crystallization of CaCO3 in aragonite, resulting in easily removable soft fouling. An evaluation model was proposed to better define the fouling inhibition effect of the variable frequency electromagnetic field.

Scaling control of gasketed plate heat exchanger by using very low frequency electromagnetic resonance fields

Nihad Kamar et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of a low-intensity electromagnetic field on calcium carbonate deposits in a heat exchanger. Experimental results show that the mass of the deposits is reduced by 78.8% with the electromagnetic treatment, while the polymorphism of calcium carbonate remains unchanged.

Mohammad Hossein Zolfagharnasab et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates several porous-filled shell and tube heat exchangers (STHXs) and finds that porous filling can improve heat transfer performance and achieve a homogeneous thermal distribution, but it also increases pressure loss. Partially porous-filling is suitable for low-scale applications.

Using electromagnetic fields to inhibit biofouling and scaling in biogas slurry drip irrigation emitters

Yang Xiao et al.

Summary: The study found that electromagnetic fields (EMFs) inhibited microbial growth and affected the physiochemical parameters of BS. EMFs altered bacterial communities, reducing diversities. Additionally, EMFs treatment not only decreased carbonates in emitters, but also prevented phosphates, silicates, and quartzes depositions.

Inorganic fouling of heat transfer surface from potable water during convective heat transfer

Amthal Al-Gailani et al.

Summary: The study found that the scale formed on surfaces mainly consists of two distinct regions: a smooth and flat layer, and a rough calcium carbonate layer, with copper and aluminum surfaces having a greater scaling tendency. Additionally, the complex effect of flow rate on scale formation was also discussed in the study.
