Experimental study on the seismic behavior of RC columns with high axial compression ratios retrofitted by large rupture strain fiber-reinforced polymer

Chao Ma et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on the seismic performance of RC columns retrofitted by PET FRP composites. The results show that PET FRP retrofitting changes the failure mode of RC columns from brittle to more ductile and significantly improves the ductility and lateral deformation capacity. PET FRP retrofitting is more effective for RC columns with higher axial compression ratio. The conclusions from this study provide useful references for the seismic retrofitting of RC structures.

Axial Compression Behavior of Wall-like Reinforced Concrete Columns Retrofitted Using Different FRP Schemes

Husain Abbas et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted on the retrofitting of half-scale wall-like reinforced concrete (RC) columns. The columns were strengthened by using external confinement through fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) wraps and/or steel/FRP strips with/without modification of the column cross-section. The axial load versus displacement and strain curves were discussed. The experimental results were compared with numerical models, showing a reasonably close agreement with less than 10% error for the peak load. Different confinement schemes led to an enhancement in the load capacity of the strengthened columns in the range of 30-42% compared to the control column. Significant ductility improvements were observed when using FRP wraps after shape modification.

Ensemble Machine Learning-Based Approach for Predicting of FRP-Concrete Interfacial Bonding

Bubryur Kim et al.

Summary: This paper presents an ensemble machine learning approach capable of accurately predicting the bond strength between FRP and concrete interfaces. The proposed CatBoost algorithm outperforms other ensemble methods in terms of various performance metrics. A comparative study with existing models also demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method in predicting FRP-concrete interfacial bond strength.

Comparison of monotonic axial compressive behavior of rectangular concrete confined by FRP with different rupture strains

Yanlei Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the axial compressive behavior of rectangular concrete confined by FRP with different rupture strains, finding that the rupture strain of FRP significantly influenced the failure mode and deformation of the concrete; as the rupture strain of FRP increased, the strain reduction factors decreased due to more non-uniform dilation from larger rupture strain FRP. The axial stress vs. strain curves of the concrete confined by FRP could be categorized into three types based on the transition point and ultimate condition, including sufficient, moderate, and insufficient FRP confinement.

Modelling sound absorption properties for recycled polyethylene terephthalate-based material using Gaussian regression

Gino Iannace et al.

Summary: Plastic is widely used around the world, leading to increased production in recent years, but its end-of-life poses significant environmental problems. Recycling policies have been implemented to collect and recycle plastic materials. An analysis of the acoustic properties of a recycled polyethylene terephthalate-based material showed good sound-absorbing characteristics, especially at high frequencies, with a numerical model developed to simulate the sound absorption coefficient demonstrating excellent performance with an R-Squared value of 0.97.
