Case study of vortex-induced vibration and mitigation mechanism for a long-span suspension bridge

Yaojun Ge et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the triggering mechanism and mitigation measures of VIV phenomena in Humen Bridge using field measurements, numerical simulations, and wind tunnel tests. The results show that the temporary installation of water-filled barriers caused the sudden first VIV, while the reduction of structural damping caused the succedent secondary VIV. After verification, aerodynamic control and structural damping control measures were successfully applied and effectively suppressed VIVs in Humen Bridge.

Probabilistic vortex-induced vibration occurrence prediction of the twin-box girder for long-span cable-stayed bridges based on wind tunnel tests

Baixue Ge et al.

Summary: This paper presents an approach to predict the occurrence of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) using the decision tree method. Wind tunnel tests were conducted to investigate the effects of different parameters on VIV performance. The application of aerodynamic countermeasures (ACMs) to suppress VIV and the cost-benefit analysis of ACMs application were also studied.

Investigation on aerodynamic force nonlinear evolution for a central-slotted box girder under torsional vortex-induced vibration

Shengyuan Liu et al.

Summary: Central-slotted box girders are widely used in long-span bridges for their advantageous flutter stability, but their aerodynamic characteristics during VIV show nonlinear evolutionary features. Wind-induced pressures contribute to the VEF during VIV, with downstream and upstream boxes showing opposite correlations with VEF. The central slot in the girder enhances VEF and explains why VIV effects are stronger in central-slotted box girders compared to streamlined girders.

Ride comfort evaluation of stochastic traffic flow crossing long-span suspension bridge experiencing vortex-induced vibration

Jin Zhu et al.

Summary: The high flexibility and low structural damping of long-span bridges make them susceptible to various wind-induced vibrations, with vortex-induced vibration (VIV) causing significant concern in recent years. Therefore, evaluating the ride comfort of vehicles crossing long-span bridges under VIV is urgent for decision-making on bridge operations. A general ride comfort evaluation procedure is proposed in this paper, considering realistic traffic behavior and interactions among wind, vehicles, and bridge, validated through field-monitoring data of a prototype long-span suspension bridge. Additionally, the effects of traffic density, traffic proportion, and road roughness on drivers' ride comfort are studied.

Experimental investigation on vortex-induced vibrations of a triple-box girder with web modification

Chaoqun Wang et al.

Summary: This experimental study focused on the VIV of a triple-box girder with different web modifications and found that the linear-type web performed better in terms of VIV performance compared to the curved web. Increasing structural damping and turbulence intensity can help mitigate VIV. The geometric profiles and arrangement of appurtenant facilities on the girder have significant effects on VIV performance.

Experimental study on characteristics of vortex-induced vibration of a twin-box girder and damping effects

Buchen Wu et al.

Summary: Through wind tunnel tests, it was found that vortex-induced vibration of the twin-box girder occurs within a certain range of wind speeds, with maximum displacement at a specific wind speed. The vibration trajectory of the VIV shows asymmetry during loading and unloading stages. In the lock-in region, as aerodynamic lift force increases, both vibration displacement and phase lag also increase.

Review of the excitation mechanism and aerodynamic flow control of vortex-induced vibration of the main girder for long-span bridges: A vortex-dynamics approach

Donglai Gao et al.

Summary: Two vortex-induced vibration (VIV) events occurred on the main girder of long-span bridges in China in 2020, drawing public attention, especially with notable amplitude on the Humen suspension bridge leading to a 10-day traffic closure. VIV sensitivity to structural and ambient issues, potential fatigue failure risk, and the need to explore excitation mechanisms and develop effective vibration mitigation methods are highlighted. A review on VIV mechanism and aerodynamic countermeasures, focusing on vortex dynamics and flow control methods, with future research prospects in fluid-structure interaction and aerodynamic vibration mitigation presented.

Experimental and numerical studies of wind-resistance performance of twin-box girder bridges with various grid plates

Rui Zhou et al.

Summary: Through wind-tunnel tests and finite-element analysis, this study found that a thin-walled grid plate can effectively improve the flutter and aerostatic performance of a twin-box girder bridge, with larger grid porosity showing better results. However, for VIV performance, a smaller grid porosity is more advantageous.
