Continuous carbon fiber reinforced composite negative stiffness mechanical metamaterial for recoverable energy absorption

Shuai Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of negative stiffness (NS) mechanical metamaterials in the field of energy absorption. The study proposes and fabricates a reusable continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite NS mechanical metamaterial. It comprehensively understands the structural quasistatic mechanical properties through compression tests and numerical simulations, verifies the repeatability of the metamaterial through cyclic compression, and investigates the influence of structural parameters and stacking sequence on the mechanical properties. The study also conducts plate-impact tests to evaluate the cushion performance of the metamaterial.

Design of a metastructure for vibration isolation with quasi-zero-stiffness characteristics using bistable curved beam

Srajan Dalela et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a metastructure-based vibration isolation model with high static and low dynamic stiffness properties to enhance isolation effectiveness of small-scale equipment under low-frequency excitations. The quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) effect is achieved through the snap-through behavior of cosine beam systems and bending-dominated behavior of semicircular arches within each unit cell. Analytical and numerical studies as well as experimental validation confirm the static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed metastructure, showing lower transmissibility and wider isolation range compared to a linear model. The parametric study reveals that motion transmissibility decreases with decreasing damping ratio in the low-frequency region, while increasing damping ratio leads to wider effective isolation range. Stability analysis shows the unstable region in the frequency response curve reduces with higher damping ratio and is independent of excitation amplitude.

Summary: This paper proposes a modular multistable metamaterial (MMM) with reprogrammable mechanical properties, which can adjust its stability by changing the snap-through behavior of its unit cells. The authors evaluate the tunability of geometry and mechanical properties of the unit cell and provide a design guide for assembling the MMM. Experimental and numerical studies are conducted to investigate the reprogrammable macroscopic mechanical behaviors of the MMM and demonstrate its possibilities for assembly.

Design and elastic mechanical response of a novel 3D-printed hexa-chiral helical structure with negative Poisson's ratio

Chongxi Jiao et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel 3D hexa-chiral helical structure design with negative Poisson's ratio, investigated its mechanical behaviors through experimental, theoretical, and numerical methods, and explored the relationship between geometric parameters and structural properties. The study used quasi-static compression tests and finite element simulation to analyze the relationship between geometric parameters and elastic mechanical properties, with good agreement between experimental and simulation results. The special coupled compression-torsion deformation mode and extension effect of the structure in a larger space were also discussed, providing insights for further optimizing geometric design for customized structural performance.

A novel design of multi-stable metastructures for energy dissipation

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: By increasing the bending stiffness of beams while keeping the volume/mass constant, energy dissipation of metastructures can be largely improved. The lattice and hollow cross-section designs proposed in this work demonstrate good performance in achieving this goal, with sequential snap-through transitions and relatively large energy dissipation observed experimentally.

Merging Bragg and Local Resonance Bandgaps in Perforated Elastic Metamaterials with Embedded Spiral Holes

Xiangyu Tian et al.

Summary: Perforated elastic metamaterials (EMMs) consisting of periodic holes have gained attention for their simple fabrication and unique physical properties. A novel type of perforated EMMs with two bandgap formation mechanisms has been proposed for low-frequency and broadband wave attenuation. Experiments and numerical analyses demonstrate that this design can create multiple bandgaps in the sub-wavelength frequency domain, including two Bragg bandgaps with a 76% reduced frequency, two overlapping bandgaps dominated by local resonance, and two deaf bands.
