Comparative study on numerical simulation methods of stress concentration calculation and fatigue life prediction for welds

Zhengping He et al.

Summary: The effective notch stress method considers the notch effect and solves the stress singularity in FEA by setting a virtual notch radius. However, this method has limitations such as inaccurate calculation results affected by the virtual radius and modeling difficulty. The recommended structural stress method based on fracture mechanics has no such limitation and also considers the notch effect and stress singularity. Two engineering cases were compared to demonstrate the engineering applicability of the two methods, and the results showed that the structural stress method has better engineering applicability and is worth popularizing.

Revealing the complex effects of particle bands on fatigue crack growth in an extruded aluminium matrix composite

Jiwei Geng et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively investigated the complex effects of reinforcements on the fatigue crack growth behavior in a wrought Al matrix composite by hierarchical characterizations considering particle bands. The results indicate that the crack growth mechanisms of the composite are influenced not only by the matrix microstructures but also by the TiB2 particles. The blocking effect of TiB2 particles on fatigue crack growth was found to be experimentally dependent on the particle band width. In-situ observations and microstructural evolutions near the fracture surface were discussed in relation to the fatigue crack growth mechanisms in the composite.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the deformation and fracture of metal-matrix composites. Composite microstructures with a single ceramic particle in a homogeneous or polycrystalline matrix are generated using a step-by-step packing method. The thermoelastic-plastic reaction of the matrices is described using isotropic and anisotropic relations, and fracture criteria are developed to describe crack initiation and propagation.

Mechanical responses of in-situ TiB2/7050 composite subjected to monotonic and cyclic loadings: A comparative study with 7050-Al

Min-ge Duan et al.

Summary: The monotonic and cyclic behavior of in-situ TiB2/7050 composite and 7050-Al were studied. The composite exhibited higher modulus and strength but lower fracture strain compared to 7050-Al. Both materials showed slight cyclic softening and quick saturation. Under strain cycling, there was an immediate drop in stress amplitudes followed by a gradual increase with variations in mean strain. Asymmetric stress cycling led to ratcheting, which increased with rising mean stress or stress amplitude. The cyclic plasticity behavior of both materials was characterized by a combined model of kinematic and isotropic hardening.
