Application of a Combined FEM/DEM Approach for Teaching a Deep Rock Mass Mechanics Course

Fan Feng et al.

Summary: This article introduces a professional course in deep rock mass mechanics offered by mining universities, covering topics such as geological structure, mechanical properties, strength theory, stability analysis, and application of rock mechanics in mining engineering. To overcome the limitations of traditional teaching methods, the authors proposed integrating a combined FEM/DEM approach into the course. Through the analysis of rock behaviors and failure process using ELFEN software, the results show that this approach is feasible and reasonable, with advantages such as strong intuition, high reliability, time and labor savings, and low cost. Additionally, it stimulates students' interests, deepens their understanding, and cultivates their innovative abilities.

Shear behavior and fracturing mechanism of intact sandstone affected by spatio-temporally varying water

Xin Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of water on the shear behavior of sandstone through experiments and numerical simulations. The results show that an increase in humidity significantly decreases the shear strength and stiffness of the sandstone. The distribution of humidity affects the heterogeneity of the rock material and the stress field, influencing the location of crack formation.

Effect of water contents and initial crack lengths on mechanical properties and failure modes of pre-cracked compacted clay under uniaxial compression

Taiki Shimbo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of water content and initial crack length on the mechanical properties and failure modes of pre-cracked compacted clay under uniaxial compression. The results showed that the unconfined compressive strength decreased with longer initial crack length or higher water content. On the other hand, the deformation modulus was influenced by water content but not by initial crack length. The mode II fracture toughness (K-IIC) was found to depend on water content and empirical correlation formulas were obtained. The failure modes of the compacted clay were classified into five types, with some specimens showing the disappearance of wing cracks and the presence of only secondary cracks due to contact and gliding of the crack surface by shear stress.

Failure process and characteristics of three-dimensional high-stress circular tunnel under saturated water content

Xue-feng Si et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of saturated water content on the failure process and characteristics of a circular tunnel in surrounding rocks through true-triaxial compression tests on cubic granite samples. The results show that water can reduce the severity of rock failure, which has important implications for the prevention and control of rockbursts in deep underground engineering.

Cracking mechanism and strength criteria evaluation of granite affected by intermediate principal stresses subjected to unloading stress state

Fan Feng et al.

Summary: Experimental tests on Miluo granite specimens reveal that as the intermediate principal stress σ2 increases, the failure mode shifts from shear to slabbing, exacerbating the extensional cracks. Analyzed through various methods, the peak unloading strength in true-triaxial conditions exhibits an initial increase followed by a decrease with increasing σ2.
