Modeling of migratory beekeeper behaviors with machine learning approach using meteorological and environmental variables: The case of Turkey

Ahmet Albayrak et al.

Summary: This study modeled migratory beekeeping behavior in Turkey, focusing on food sources and meteorological variables. With a relatively small dataset, ensemble learning techniques were used to classify Turkey's provinces, determining 33 suitable for migratory beekeeping. Thematic maps were then produced for beekeepers, providing guidance and an information system.

Tracking individual honeybees among wildflower clusters with computer vision-facilitated pollinator monitoring

Malika Nisal Ratnayake et al.

Summary: Monitoring animals in their natural habitat is crucial for behavioral studies, with non-invasive image-based tracking being a potentially valuable approach. However, tracking unmarked wild animals outdoors using video can be complex, especially in cases of occlusion in a 3D environment. A novel hybrid detection and tracking algorithm has been developed to address this issue, demonstrating higher accuracy in tracking honeybees foraging outdoors compared to existing techniques.

Direct Economic Impact Assessment of Winter Honeybee Colony Losses in Three European Countries

Despina Popovska Stojanov et al.

Summary: Honeybees play a crucial role in pollination and hive products, but the loss of managed colonies due to factors like parasites, viruses, pesticides, and climate change has significant economic implications. A pioneer methodology was developed to estimate the economic impact of winter colony losses in Austria, Czechia, and Macedonia, highlighting the importance of honeybees for the agricultural sector beyond subsidies.

Automated monitoring and analyses of honey bee pollen foraging behavior using a deep learning-based imaging system

Thi Nha Ngo et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient method for automatically monitoring honey bee pollen foraging behavior and environmental conditions through an embedded imaging system. Experimental results show that daily pollen foraging trip ratio was 24.5% and a single beehive collected about 49.1g of pollen per day. Pollen foraging trip count increased with increasing temperature and light intensity, and decreased with increasing relative humidity, rain level, and wind speed.

Acquisition of 3-D trajectories with labeling support for multi-species insects under unconstrained flying conditions

Abdul Nasir et al.

Summary: A new technique based on stereo vision is proposed to acquire three-dimensional time-resolved trajectories for multi-species insects under unconstrained flying conditions. By using a low-cost depth camera and two novel strategies, the challenges posed by small insect size, fast movements, and natural lighting are effectively addressed, providing object localization and labeling support for acquired trajectories. This technique has been successfully applied to honey bees and invasive hornets near beehives, demonstrating high accuracy in trajectory measurements and labeling support.
