Has global agricultural trade been resilient under coronavirus (COVID-19)? Findings from an econometric assessment of 2020

Shawn Arita et al.

Summary: Global agricultural trade remained stable during the COVID-19 pandemic, but was still impacted to some extent. The overall impact of COVID-19 on agricultural trade was estimated to be around 5% to 10%, smaller in magnitude compared to non-agricultural sector trade. Different commodity types were affected differently, with non-food items and high-value agricultural products being most severely impacted, while most food and bulk agricultural commodities were either insignificantly affected or had positive impacts.

Environmental outcomes of the US Renewable Fuel Standard

Tyler J. Lark et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the realized effects of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in the United States through econometric analyses, land use observations, and biophysical models. The findings show that the RFS policy increased corn and crop prices, expanded corn cultivation and cropland, raised fertilizer use and water quality degradants, and resulted in higher carbon intensity of corn ethanol compared to gasoline. These tradeoffs need to be considered when making decisions about renewable energy policies and the role of corn ethanol in climate mitigation goals.

Evaluation of survey and remote sensing data products used to estimate land use change in the United States: Evolving issues and emerging opportunities

Minzi Wang et al.

Summary: Transparent, consistent, and statistically reliable land use/land cover area estimates are crucial for assessing land use change and greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reviews six commonly used data sources and two remote sensing-based data products to investigate land use/land cover and change in the contiguous U.S. The study identifies research gaps and challenges in current land use studies and suggests opportunities and emerging techniques for improving reliability. Blended approaches that combine high-quality ground truth data with multitemporal imagery are needed to track non-agricultural lands vulnerable to agricultural expansion.

Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel Production in the United States

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the greenhouse gas emissions of biodiesel and renewable diesel production from different oilseed crops and waste fats. The results show that biodiesel and renewable diesel can achieve significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, with waste cooking oil and distillers corn oil showing the highest reduction potential. The lower emissions of biodiesel compared to renewable diesel in oilseed-based pathways is attributed to the less energy-intensive process of transesterification. However, using feedstocks with high free fatty acid content for biodiesel production may result in slightly higher emissions due to higher energy use for pretreatment.

Is ethanol production responsible for the increase in corn prices?

Emrah Kocak et al.

Summary: The study shows that ethanol production increases corn prices, while oil prices and population exert pressure on corn prices. An increase in the real exchange rate has a decreasing effect on corn prices.

Comment on 'Carbon Intensity of corn ethanol in the United States: state of the science'

Seth A. Spawn-Lee et al.

Summary: Researchers revised carbon intensity estimates for corn-grain ethanol, significantly reducing previous estimates to suggest a lower current estimate. However, their methodology has been criticized for filtering estimates based on unfounded criteria, potentially leading to underestimation of the actual values.

Accuracy, Bias, and Improvements in Mapping Crops and Cropland across the United States Using the USDA Cropland Data Layer

Tyler J. Lark et al.

Summary: The study comprehensively characterized the performance of the CDL across space and time using state- and land cover class-specific accuracy statistics from the USDA. It found that the CDL provides highly accurate annual measures of crops and cropland areas, showing good performance in identifying specific crops.

Assessment of COVID-19 impacts on US counties using the immediate impact model of local agricultural production (IMLAP)

Iman Haqiqi et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the immediate impacts of COVID-19 on agricultural and food systems in the United States, finding that changes in labor may lead to a decline in agricultural output, especially affecting small-scale farms, non-white farmers, and female-operated farms.
