Hydrokinetic energy conversion using flow induced oscillations of single-cylinder with large passive turbulence control

Ningyu Li et al.

Summary: The effect of damping on flow-induced oscillations and power extraction is investigated in a converter with large turbulence stimulation. Increasing damping reduces oscillation amplitude and affects frequency ratio. The use of large turbulence stimulation in the converter eliminates the drop in power and efficiency even at higher damping.

Optimum performance of a horizontal axis tidal current turbine: A numerical parametric study and experimental validation

Ramin Alipour et al.

Summary: The geometry of hydrokinetic tidal current turbine is crucial for its performance. This study investigates the effect of curvature, thickness, and blade pitch angle on turbine performance, considering the probability of fatigue loading. Different airfoils with acceptable lift to drag ratios were used to design turbine blades, and computational fluid dynamics was employed to simulate turbine performance under various conditions. An experimental setup was also used to validate the computational results. Results indicate that increasing thickness at higher blade pitch angle values enhances the maximum torque, while increasing the tip speed ratio improves the maximum power coefficient. The parameter SCPmax is introduced to assess the usefulness of each airfoil based on various factors and demonstrate the utility of maximum performance against fatigue hazard.

The effects of surge motion on the dynamics and wake characteristics of a floating tidal stream turbine under free surface condition

Bin Peng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance of tidal stream turbines under free surface condition and with surge motion using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code. The study shows that the power and thrust coefficients are affected by the surge amplitude and period, and the wake structure is more sensitive to the variation of surge period. It is also important to consider the restriction on the oscillation frequency in the designing phase. Further research should explore the effects of blockage and depth immersion on extreme functioning and cavitation effects.

Pre-expansion ejector absorption power cycle for ocean thermal energy conversion

Suyun Yi et al.

Summary: This study proposes a pre-expansion ejector absorption power cycle for ocean thermal energy conversion, which enhances the turbine output by introducing a pre-expansion separator and an ejector. The analysis shows that the ejection-driven turbine output can effectively increase with the pre-expansion process, although the thermal efficiency slightly decreases. The working range of the pre-expansion ejector is influenced by the pre-expansion pressure and the temperature of the heat and cold source.

Performance augmentation mechanism of tandem flapping foils with stroke time-asymmetry

Guangjian Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the performance augmentation mechanism of a tandem-foil system undergoing time-asymmetric flapping with unequal up- and downstroke durations at different phase angles. Results show that proper phase angles and stroke time-asymmetry can enhance foil performance significantly, providing insights for the design of efficient wing kinematics for high-performance biomimetic propulsors. The enhancements in force production are achieved through changes in foil flapping velocities and foil-vortex interactions between the unequal up- and downstrokes, with in-phase flapping obtaining a 15% increment and counterstroke flapping achieving remarkable enhancements by 2.5 times as the asymmetry ratio increases from 0 to 0.4.

Summary: This study examines the responses of two oscillating hydrofoils with a tandem arrangement, finding that the downstream hydrofoil has inferior energy harvesting performance due to operating in the wake of the upstream hydrofoil. Negative wake vortex interactions can lead to different equilibrium positions and lower energy harvesting performance of the downstream hydrofoil, especially at high oscillation frequencies.
