Biodegradable, scalable and flexible fiber membrane for green passive radiative cooling

Peng Xu et al.

Summary: The passive radiative cooling (PRC) approach allows zero-energy cooling by reflecting solar light and radiating heat simultaneously. However, most of the current PRC materials, especially polymer-based ones, are not able to be naturally degraded in the environment over a short time period when discarded, causing the current white pollution problem. In this study, a novel PRC material based on eco-friendly fiber membrane derived from biomass-derived silk fibroin (SF) and polylactic acid (PLA) was developed, which can quickly degrade in outdoor soil environment within one month. The SF/PLA fiber membrane achieved high solar reflectance and infrared emittance, resulting in sub-ambient cooling temperature even under high solar intensity. Large-scale production of the material was achieved through a simple and cost-effective electrostatic spinning-based manufacturing process. This study offers a new strategy that combines biodegradation with zero-energy cooling and shows great potential for widespread applications, significantly reducing energy consumption and carbon emission.

The influence of boron nitride shape and size on thermal conductivity, rheological and passive cooling properties of polyethylene composites

Yiding Wang et al.

Summary: The shape and particle size of the filler play a crucial role in determining the performance of composite materials. In this study, the effects of boron nitride (BN) shapes and sizes on the rheological properties, thermal conductivity, and passive cooling of polyethylene composites were investigated. Large-sized fillers negatively influenced the formation of a rheological network in the composites, but positively affected the thermal conductivity with a maximum increase of 256% compared to the matrix. Additionally, the composites exhibited excellent cooling performance due to their high solar reflectance and thermal emittance. This research provides valuable guidance for the optimization of BN fillers in thermal management and passive cooling applications.
