Simulation-based framework to evaluate resistivity of cooling strategies in buildings against overheating impact of climate change

R. Rahif et al.

Summary: Overheating in buildings has become a major concern in recent decades, and this issue is expected to worsen due to climate change. This paper introduces a comprehensive simulation-based framework for evaluating the thermal performance and resistivity of various cooling strategies. The framework utilizes several indicators to quantify the indoor overheating risk and resistance to climate change. A case study comparing two air-based cooling strategies in different locations/climates is presented to test the proposed framework.

Evaluating the 35°C wet-bulb temperature adaptability threshold for young, healthy subjects (PSU HEAT Project)

Daniel J. Vecellio et al.

Summary: This study for the first time uses empirical physiological observations to examine the widely-publicized theoretical limit of 35 degrees C wet-bulb temperature for human adaptability to extreme environments. It found that uncompensable heat stress in humid environments occurs at wet-bulb temperatures significantly lower than 35 degrees C in young, healthy adults. Additionally, the study shows that uncompensable heat stress occurs at widely different wet-bulb temperatures depending on ambient vapor pressure.

Resilience to the climate change of nearly zero energy-building designed according to the EPBD recast: Monitoring, calibrated energy models and perspective simulations of a Mediterranean nZEB living lab

Fabrizio Ascione et al.

Summary: The paper focuses on evaluating the impact of climate change on nearly zero energy buildings and their energy balance resilience. A case study in a Mediterranean climate shows that reducing heating demand can compensate for increased cooling demand. However, the operating period of the cooling system may lead to indoor overheating issues.

Comfort and economic aspects of phase change materials integrated with heavy-structure buildings in hot climates

D. Abd El-Raheim et al.

Summary: This paper examines the economic viability and efficacy of phase change materials in improving the thermal comfort of heavy-structure buildings. The results show that phase change materials with melting temperatures of 29 and 25 degrees C perform the best in free-floating and air conditioning modes, respectively. Combining a thin layer of phase change material with thermal insulation can significantly reduce exceedance hours, decrease air conditioning energy, and shorten the payback period.

Impact of climate change on nearly zero-energy dwelling in temperate climate: Time-integrated discomfort, HVAC energy performance, and GHG emissions

Ramin Rahif et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of climate change on a nearly zero-energy dwelling in Brussels. It finds that overheating risk will increase while overcooling risk will decrease by the end of the century. Additionally, the study shows that a reversible air-to-water heat pump strategy has lower HVAC primary energy use and greenhouse gas emissions compared to a gas-fired boiler + air conditioner strategy.

Future evolution of the hydroclimatic conditions favouring floods in the south-east of Belgium by 2100 using a regional climate model

Coraline Wyard et al.

Summary: Most flood events in Belgium occur in winter due to intense precipitation and snowpack melting, which have been decreasing over the years. Future projections under global warming show accelerated snow depletion and reduced snowmelt-related flood risk days. Extreme precipitation events do not show significant changes in their impact on flooding.

Summary: The study shows that the urbanized area of Pan-Third Pole cities has increased from 2809 km(2) in 2000 to 4380 km(2) in 2017, with an annual growth rate of nearly 3%, possibly the largest increase in the world. Population growth drives urban expansion, elevation is a limiting factor, and proximity to roads facilitates urbanization.
