Controlling Morphology and Voltage Loss with Ternary Strategy Triggers Efficient All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells

Mengyun Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, a new acceptor L8-BO was combined with the B1:BO-4Cl system to construct efficient ternary all-small-molecule organic solar cells (ASM-OSCs). Theoretical, morphological, and crystallographic studies showed that L8-BO and BO-4Cl had good compatibility, leading to the formation of an alloy-like state in the ternary blend. The synergy between the two acceptors promoted favorable phase separation and molecular stacking, enhancing charge splitting and extraction and resulting in improved short-circuit current density and fill factor. Furthermore, the alloy-like state of the acceptors and the higher energy level of L8-BO helped reduce voltage loss in the ternary ASM-OSCs compared to binary devices. The optimal ternary ASM-OSCs with 20 wt% L8-BO achieved a top-level efficiency of 17.10%.

18.66% Efficiency of Polymer Solar Cells Employing Two Nonfullerene Acceptors with Fluorine or Chlorine Substitution

Shuping Zhang et al.

Summary: By finely modulating the energy levels and absorption spectra, organic semiconducting materials with fluorine or chlorine substitution are designed for efficient polymer solar cells (PSCs). In this study, two small molecular acceptors with fluorine or chlorine substitution are selected to prepare ternary PSCs with a polymer donor. The optimal ternary PSCs exhibit a high power conversion efficiency of 18.66% by increasing the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and fill factor. The addition of chlorine substitution enhances the crystallization and intermolecular interaction, leading to improved charge transport and device performance.

Benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b' ]Difuran-Based Polymer for Organic Solar Cells with 17.5% Efficiency via Halogenation-Mediated Aggregation Control

Xiyue Yuan et al.

Summary: By synthesizing two new BDF-based wide bandgap-conjugated polymers, PFCT-2F and PFCT-2Cl, researchers have achieved high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs). Among them, PFCT-2Cl exhibits better aggregation properties, higher pi-pi stacking ordering, and appropriate miscibility with the electron acceptor, resulting in a higher power conversion efficiency. This study reveals the critical role of aggregation control in BDF-based polymers and demonstrates the bright future of constructing high-performance OSCs from bio-renewable sources.

Effects of Oxygen Position in the Alkoxy Substituents on the Photovoltaic Performance of A-DA'D-A Type Pentacyclic Small Molecule Acceptors

Qingya Wei et al.

Summary: This work investigates the reason behind the abnormal blue-shifted absorption of A-DA' D-A type small molecule acceptors caused by the alkoxy substituent on the terminal thiophene in a fused DA' D unit. A simple molecular strategy of altering the oxygen position along the alkoxy side chains is proposed to fine-tune the optoelectronic properties. By synthesizing different derivatives with varying oxygen positions, it is found that the absorption wavelength can be blue-shifted or red-shifted. The BZ4F-O-3 based device achieved a favorable efficiency of 14.69%.
