The pore-scale mechanisms of surfactant-assisted spontaneous and forced imbibition in water-wet tight oil reservoirs

Bao Cao et al.

Summary: The imbibition of water with surfactants is important for enhanced oil recovery in tight sandstone reservoirs. This study investigated the migration behaviors of water and oil in different-sized pores, as well as the mechanisms of spontaneous and forced imbibition with different surfactants. It was found that surfactants increased oil recovery, especially in mesopores and macropores. However, low-IFT surfactants reduced oil recovery in micropores. Forced imbibition enhanced water imbibition into micropores but prevented oil extraction from mesopores and macropores.

Yiqian Qu et al.

Summary: This study conducted experiments on tight sandstone samples in the Ordos Basin, China to investigate pore-throat spaces and fluid flow capacity, finding that different types of pore-throat spaces affect the complexity of the structure, with throat-dominant space playing a crucial role in controlling fluid flow, and intergranular pore-dominant space contributing to permeability. Additionally, changes in throat volume proportion with pore-throat radius were studied, showing fluctuations in proportion before rapidly increasing at a certain radius.

Bowen Sun et al.

Summary: Determining the condensate oil saturation in condensate gas reservoirs is crucial for estimating blockage and productivity of gas wells. This study utilized low field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to investigate the condensate oil saturation in core samples and established a standard equation for calculating the saturation. The results revealed that condensate oil primarily appears in micropores, and the retrograde condensation phenomenon is mainly contributed by mesopores and macropores.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the Lucaogou Formation in different sag areas of the southern Junggar Basin and found that it was generally deposited under semiarid to arid conditions with dysoxic-anoxic conditions prevailing. The salinity levels varied in different sag areas, with the Jimsar Sag exhibiting the highest salinity. The deposition of the Lucaogou Formation was influenced by the deglaciation of Gondwanaland, resulting in a lake transgression trend.

Distribution characteristics and oil mobility thresholds in lacustrine shale reservoir: Insights from N2 adsorption experiments on samples prior to and following hydrocarbon extraction

Long-Hui Bai et al.

Summary: The pore structure and oil content of shales have a significant impact on oil mobility and enrichment. This study focuses on lacustrine shale samples from the Qingshankou Formation in the Songliao Basin. The analysis of mineral composition and organic matter reveals the development of nano-scale organic pores in the shale samples, with oil primarily found in pore spaces smaller than 10 nm. High oil mobility is observed when TOCo > 2.0 wt% and EOM > 1.0 wt%, indicating prospective drilling targets in the Qingshankou Formation shale.

Evaluation of the Shale Oil Reservoir and the Oil Enrichment Model for the First Member of the Lucaogou Formation, Western Jimusaer Depression, Junggar Basin, NW China

Boyang Wang et al.

Summary: The Lucaogou Formation in the Jimusaer depression is the first large-scale development of a terrigenous clastic sedimentary shale oil reservoir in China, with nearly one billion tons of shale oil resources discovered. The petrology, geochemistry, oil content, and pore properties of the second part of the first member of the Lucaogou Formation in a typical well in the western part of the depression were studied. Findings indicate that the P2I12 layer is a mixed fine-grained sedimentary system with high oil saturation but low maturity of crude oil, mainly influenced by sedimentary environment and maturity of source rocks. Lithology and reservoir physical properties play a key role in controlling oil content, with argillaceous dolomite and sandstone identified as high-quality light oil reservoir lithology.
