Interaction between Organic Solvents and Three Types of Kerogen Investigated via X-ray Diffraction

Tian Liang et al.

Summary: In this study, a new swelling method was used to investigate the chemical structure of kerogen. X-ray diffraction was employed to detect the structural changes during the swelling process. The selective absorption of aromatic hydrocarbons by kerogen was observed, with type I kerogen demonstrating the highest sorption ability. The microcrystalline structure of kerogen remained unchanged during the swelling process.

Sticky layers affect oil transport through the nanopores of realistic shale kerogen

Sen Wang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the adsorption and pressure-driven flow behavior of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures through realistic shale kerogen nanopores, revealing a parabolic velocity profile of hydrocarbons only in the central pore and the formation of a sticky layer on the kerogen surface. The existence of the sticky layer decreases the mobilized cross-sectional area of the kerogen pore, dramatically impeding the transport capability of shale oil.

Flow behaviors of shale oil in kerogen slit by molecular dynamics simulation

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow behavior of multicomponent shale oil in realistic kerogen channels using molecular dynamic simulation. The results show that the flow of shale oil exhibits peristaltic behavior due to the influence of kerogen branched chains. The heavy component forms adsorbed layers, while asphaltene molecules cluster in bulk phase. Increasing driving force and temperature enhance shale oil flow.

Molecular characterization of carbon dioxide, methane, and water adsorption in micropore space of kerogen matrix

Leebyn Chong et al.

Summary: The interaction of carbon dioxide and methane with organic matter represented by kerogen heavily impacts carbon storage and enhanced gas recovery in shales. In this study, molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations were used to investigate the adsorption of carbon dioxide, methane, and water in immature type II-A kerogen. Water shows the highest uptake due to strong energy interaction with kerogen, while methane and carbon dioxide display similar adsorption in micropore space.

Molecular Dynamics Study on CO2 Storage in Water-Filled Kerogen Nanopores in Shale Reservoirs: Effects of Kerogen Maturity and Pore Size

Wenhui Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of kerogen maturity and pore size on CO2 storage mechanism and capacity in water-filled kerogen nanopores using molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that CO2 storage mechanisms differ in pores of different sizes, with enhanced storage capacity in 1 nm pores due to strong interactions between kerogen and CO2. Additionally, CO2 clusters near the kerogen surface in larger pores increased overall CO2 storage capacity.

Determination of CH4, C2H6 and CO2 adsorption in shale kerogens coupling sorption-induced swelling

Xinran Yu et al.

Summary: Gas adsorption in kerogen can induce swelling, and a theoretical model is proposed to calculate excess adsorption isotherms coupling swelling. Results show stronger affinities of C2H6 and CO2 than CH4, but larger C2H6 size leads to smaller maximum adsorption amounts. A linear relationship between volumetric strain and adsorption amount is found for CH4, C2H6, and CO2 separately.

Kerogen Swelling in Light Hydrocarbon Gases and Liquids and Validity of Schroeder's Paradox

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sorption of hydrocarbon gases and liquids in kerogen and the induced swelling of kerogen matrix. The results show that smaller hydrocarbon molecules have higher sorption and induced greater swelling in the kerogen matrix. Hydrocarbon liquids induce higher kerogen swelling than gases, leading to significant changes in pore structure in the kerogen matrix.
