Advances in membranes and membrane reactors for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process for biofuel production

Dalia Liuzzi et al.

Summary: The biomass-to-liquid (BtL) process is a promising technology to obtain clean, liquid, second-generation biofuels and chemicals. The process involves gasification of biomass and catalytic transformation of the syngas obtained via the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction to produce a hydrocarbon pool known as syncrude.

Hydrogen production from low temperature supercritical water Co-Gasification of low rank lignites with biomass

Ender Faki et al.

Summary: The co-gasification of low rank lignite and sorghum energy crop was investigated under low temperature conditions with supercritical water. The study evaluated the effects of water volume, blending ratios, catalysts, and feedstock concentrations on gasification efficiency, product distribution, and hydrogen yield. Synergistic effects were observed with a coal content of 25 wt% in the coal/biomass mixture, and increasing water volume, decreasing feedstock concentration, and using alkali metal catalysts significantly improved gasification efficiency and hydrogen yield.

A New Cleaner Power Generation System Based on Self-Sustaining Supercritical Water Gasification of Coal

Liu Changchun et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new cleaner power generation system that integrates combined cycle with supercritical water gasification of coal. By cascade utilization of the thermodynamic energy of the produced syngas based on its temperature and pressure, both sensible and latent heat can be recycled. The key to further performance improvement lies in the utilization process of syngas.

The influence of Stefan flow on the flow and heat-transfer characteristics of spherical-particle pair in supercritical water

Yingdong Wang et al.

Summary: For mixtures with dispersed reactive particles, especially highly concentrated particles, the interactions between particles and between particles and fluid are complex and have significant effects on the overall flow. This study focuses on the flow and fluid-particle heat transfer characteristics of supercritical water flowing around a fixed two-particle system. The effects of different particle configurations and the influence of Stefan flow are analyzed. The results show that the configurations of two particles have significant impacts on the drag coefficient, Nusselt number, and vortex structure, and the wake vortex structure is strongly affected by Stefan flow, which reduces the drag coefficient and Nusselt number.

A zero-dimensional model of porous char gasification in supercritical water: Experiments and mathematical modeling

Chao Fan et al.

Summary: This study developed a zero-dimensional model of porous char gasification in supercritical water, which can be used for reactor-scale modeling and simulation. The evolution of specific surface area of char was obtained through experiments, and a kinetic model with detailed conversion pathways and consideration of specific surface area evolution was proposed. The model was evaluated by fitting experimental results and calculating intrinsic kinetic parameters. The developed sub-model showed reasonable prediction of gasification process and good description of particle characteristics.
