Dynamic tightness evaluation of salt cavern energy storage

Xinxing Wei et al.

Summary: In this paper, a classification model is developed using logging data from a 61-day closed well in a salt cavern of the Jianghan gas storage cavern to analyze the factors affecting salt cavern tightness. A hierarchical model and population competition model are established to analyze the influence weights of temperature and pressure on salt cavern tightness. Based on the results, a principal component analysis evaluation model of salt cavern tightness at different moments is established. The established dynamic evaluation method of salt cavern tightness has a reference value for engineering practice.

Choice of hydrogen energy storage in salt caverns and horizontal cavern construction technology

Tianji Peng et al.

Summary: This study examined different forms of underground space for large-scale hydrogen storage, and found that salt caverns are the most suitable option. However, the construction of energy storage caverns in China's salt resources is challenging due to their bedded structures and complicated geological conditions. The two-well-horizontal cavern construction method is recommended for thinly bedded salt rocks, as it has higher efficiency and cavern volume compared to the traditional single-well-vertical method. The study also identified key factors influencing the construction technology and provided recommended process parameters for the two-well-horizontal cavern construction.

Large-scale CO2 disposal/storage in bedded rock salt caverns of China: An evaluation of safety and suitability

Xiong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new carbon cycle model for carbon capture and storage based on the disposal/storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in salt caverns. The safety and suitability evaluation of CO2 disposal/storage in bedded rock salt caverns in China was carried out. The results show that long-term and medium-term disposal/storage can achieve permanent geological isolation at proper depth and operating pressure, while short-term storage can be achieved by controlling the operating pressure.

Compressed air energy storage capacity of offshore saline aquifers using isothermal cycling

Jeffrey A. Bennett et al.

Summary: The growth of intermittent offshore wind energy installations has created a need for energy storage technologies, and offshore compressed air energy storage (OCAES) is one proposed option. This study presents a method for assessing the round-trip efficiency of OCAES, demonstrating its usefulness in the Baltimore Canyon Trough. Results show that OCAES round-trip efficiencies of 60-62% could provide 8.1 TWh of storage.
