Char structure evolution during molten salt pyrolysis of biomass: Effect of temperature

Bin Li et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis of wheat straw in Li2CO3-K2CO3 binary salt enhanced charring reactions and resulted in higher biochar yield. The structure of biochar showed different trends at different pyrolysis temperatures, with the C content increasing and the H and O contents decreasing at 450-550°C, and the decrease in H content and increase in O content and decrease in C content at 600-700°C. The enhanced activation effect of the molten salt at higher temperature resulted in the formation of more porous structures and enriching the biochar with O-containing groups.

Catalysis/CO2 sorption enhanced pyrolysis-gasification of biomass for H2-rich gas production: Effects of activated carbon, NiO active component and calcined dolomite

Bin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of activated carbon, NiO active component, and calcined dolomite addition on H2-rich gas production from biomass pyrolysis-gasification. The results show that activated carbon greatly enhances H2 production due to its catalytic effect and self-gasification. Lower impregnation ratio of ZnCl2 or H3PO4 to biomass is preferable for H2 production. NiO mainly enters the micropores of activated carbon and may cover some active sites, reducing self-gasification but also showing catalytic effects on H2 production. The addition of calcined dolomite further increases H2 concentration and yield, and a synergistic effect is observed with NiO/activated carbon catalyst and calcined dolomite.

Volatile-char interactions during biomass pyrolysis: Effect of biomass acid-washing pretreatment

Yao Wang et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of acid-washing pretreatment on the pyrolysis of poplar wood under different volatile-char interactions. The experiment was performed using a self-designed fixed-bed pyrolysis reactor. It was observed that acid-washing pretreatment altered the surface morphology of the poplar wood, increasing cellulose crystallinity and reducing inorganic ash components. These components, mainly Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metal species, acted as catalysts for sugar ring fragmentation and charring reactions during both primary pyrolysis and secondary volatile-char interactions. The removal of these components resulted in an increase in bio-oil yield and a decrease in biochar and non-condensable gas yields, while also promoting the generation of pore structures in the biochar and enhancing anhydrosugars content in the bio-oil.

Microwave processing of oil palm wastes for bioenergy production and circular economy: Recent advancements, challenges, and future prospects

Shin Ying Foong et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the application of microwave-assisted thermal conversion technology in the utilization of oil palm waste, with a focus on the production of energy-dense biochar, phenolic-rich bio-oil, and H-2-rich syngas. However, challenges such as the lack of life cycle assessment and economic analysis, limited understanding of microwave-oil palm waste interaction for continuous operation, and the effects of tunable parameters and catalyst behavior on product selectivity and process efficiency still need to be addressed in large-scale biomass valorization via microwave technology.

The modeling and products prediction for biomass oxidative pyrolysis based on PSO-ANN method: An artificial intelligence algorithm approach

Shanhui Zhao et al.

Summary: The experimental results showed that the reaction mechanism of oxidative pyrolysis was complex and influenced by the addition of oxygen. Using a combination of logsig and purelin as the transfer function for the hidden layer was suitable for modeling. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) significantly increased the prediction accuracy of the ANN model.

Production of biochar from rice straw and its application for wastewater remediation-An overview

Shin Ying Foong et al.

Summary: Biochar as a green and low-cost adsorbent offers a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical-intensive and expensive wastewater treatment technologies. Upgrading biochar through modification techniques enhances its adsorption capacity and robustness for efficient removal of metal ions and organic compounds in wastewater. Future research should focus on the optimal temperature and pH levels that affect the efficiency of contaminants removal by biochar.

Volatile-char interactions during biomass pyrolysis: Effect of char preparation temperature

Bin Li et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the effect of char preparation temperature on the interactions between cellulose volatiles and acid-washed sawdust char, revealing that changes in biochar chemical structure caused by different preparation temperatures significantly impacted the final products of cellulose pyrolysis. Lower temperature chars exhibited higher reactivities, and volatile-char interactions altered the product distribution.

Coke formation during rapid quenching of volatile vapors from fast pyrolysis of cellulose

Bin Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the coke formation process during rapid quenching of volatiles produced from fast pyrolysis of cellulose in a fixed-bed reactor. The results showed a decrease in coke yield with increasing pyrolysis temperature, with coke structure containing abundant oxygen-containing functional groups and appearing more aliphatic than polyaromatic. The close relationship between volatile composition and coke formation was highlighted.

Hydrogen rich syngas production from sorption enhanced gasification of cellulose in the presence of calcium oxide

Christian Fabrice Magoua Mbeugang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of CaO on sorption enhanced gasification of cellulose for H-2 rich syngas production. Results showed that CaO acted as both a CO2 absorbent and a catalyst at lower temperatures, while only as a catalyst at higher temperatures. The optimized condition for cellulose gasification was found to be at 650 degrees C with a CaO/cellulose mass ratio of >= 4, achieving a carbon conversion rate of volatiles of around 90%.
