Energy assessment of an electrically heated catalyst in a hybrid RCCI truck

Antonio Garcia et al.

Summary: Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion offers advantages in reducing NOx and soot emissions, but suffers from higher HC and CO emissions than conventional diesel combustion. This study investigates the behavior of an electrically heated catalyst in a hybrid medium-duty truck operating with diesel-gasoline RCCI combustion, showing a slight increase in fuel consumption compared to non-hybrid RCCI case with a commercial oxidation catalyst. The results suggest that the RCCI hybrid concept with the electrically heated catalyst meets EUVI targets for pollutant emissions with 15% CO2 levels.

Energy transition scenarios: What policies, societal attitudes, and technology developments will realize the EU Green Deal?

Karlo Hainsch et al.

Summary: The European Green Deal aims to achieve 100% GHG reductions by 2050, relying on a combination of technological development, policy exertion, and societal attitudes. High electrification rates are crucial for rapid decarbonization, requiring a close coordination between technology development and policy enforcement. Insights from European energy transition scenarios are compared with other studies to identify similarities and draw consolidated findings relevant to the EU Green Deal.

Assessing trade-offs among electrification and grid decarbonization in a clean energy transition: Application to New York State

Terence Conlon et al.

Summary: A modeling framework is presented to investigate trade-offs between increased low carbon electricity generation and electrification for decarbonization. Results show that prioritizing electrification with low-carbon electricity supply can achieve emissions reductions at lower costs. Three primary cost drivers for a decarbonizing system are identified.

Life cycle assessment of battery electric vehicles: Implications of future electricity mix and different battery end-of-life management

Michael Samsu Koroma et al.

Summary: Assessing the environmental performance of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) requires consideration of factors such as battery size, charging electricity source, future changes in electricity mix, battery efficiency fade, battery refurbishment, and recycling. Conducting a scenario-based Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) can provide valuable insights into the environmental impacts of BEVs, with results showing a significant reduction in climate impacts with the increase of renewable energy usage in the electricity mix.

Plug-in behavior of electric vehicles users: Insights from a large-scale trial and impacts for grid integration studies

Felipe Gonzalez Venegas et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of considering non-systematic plug-in behavior in EV grid integration studies, finding that users tend to plug in their EV between 2 and 3 times per week, with lower plug-in frequency for large-battery EVs and large heterogeneity in charging preferences. Non-systematic plug-in behavior reduces the impact of EV charging, decreases available flexibility, especially when considering trends towards larger battery sizes.

Aerodynamics of electric cars in platoon SAGE publications

Hesham Ebrahim et al.

Summary: The study found that reducing vehicle spacing and increasing the number of vehicles in an electric vehicle platoon can significantly reduce the total power consumption of the entire platoon, with the main contributions to power savings coming from changes in surface pressure on the base of the leading vehicle and the forebody of the trailing vehicle.
